You do not have to drop the tank, I would however make sure it is relatively low on gas, there will be less spillage. I would also recommend a new rubber seal, will be easier to get back on.

I got a conversion kit from an ebay vendor, installed myself, one year later they are still working perfectly. I do not remember which vendor I got it from but it was around $500 without the booster.
