Default The Tail of the Dragon.

You ever heard of it? It's US-129 in TN/NC--a world famous road made up of hundreds of curves and hills in the Smoky Mountain area along the border with North Carolina. Bikers and auto enthusiasts especially love the place. Well I don't like to brag, but I slayed the Dragon this past week with my wheel and thought I'd share some pics. Here's a series of me tearing it up (starts at pic 256, but the money shot is around 266 when I get some air). Yeah, I said WHEEL.

Link isn't working for me.

I recently learned of this road. I know the Crossfire owners of a forum I go to have an event there each year. It looks like great fun, and I love the smokey mountains. One day I'll go.

I think the road is not the only thing you teared up
When I click the link I get a blank page.
When I click the find photographer link I get this:

The whole photo link portion is down. Looks like US129photos isn't too great as far as reliability. You can't buy what you can't see. You can't attract new buyers if the site doesn't work. I'll have to wait for Killboy to get some photos up of this past week.

Now it's back up. This was me learning to cut a line.

Seriously, it's leaf-peeping time. The area is especially nice now.

THAT CHEVY's NOT SCRAPED UP! I pulled the magnetic sign off the back door to get better aerodynamics.

Last time the wife and I were on it was 2005. Leaving Gatlinburg to go to the Casino in NC, in the wives' Envoy, she was a litle nervous but I was having a blast. I must admit, I was a little dizzy by the time we got to NC.

I guess you are driving with that orange hand odometer thingy all the time? Do you have to look out of the window and check that thing to see how fast you are driving? There are cars for sale with and onboad odometer you know How much did you have to pay extra when you bought the Chebby to get that "upgrade"

Hehe, just kidding.

But umm, can you explain what is so special about these pictures? I looked through a couple but it's all the same spot? only different cars?

It's like buying a photo of yourself enjoying a roller coaster ride at an amusement park. There are people that set up everyday at the same place and shoot every car/bike going by in hopes of selling them online to people that have ridden The Dragon--11 miles, 318 curves. Sadly, two riders have died overdoing it in the past month.

Thanks for the link PonchoV8,

That one sure requires some driving skills. When I look at it it reminds me of Luxembourg, I have done roads like that in Scotland and Luxembourg. Very cool!! In my opinion the most fun about roads like that is you actually have to DO something. Lot's of steering, shifting climbing and descending. I love roads like that. I hope I can do the "Dragon's tail" at some point in my life .

Very cool!!

I just installed the new Google Earth and followed the dragon tail, that's pretty awesome!!!
It's in 3d with heights. I found Deal's Gap.

There is also a lookout point there for the Calderwood dam to see

I know where you drove dude!! (see pic..)

Awesome. You sure can do some good homework. That Caulderwood Dam overlook is really picturesque, especially right now. The only visual encumbrance is the power lines that you can see exiting the hydro plant. Not a big deal though. The other thing is finding a parking spot can be tough sometimes. If you make it to the Smoky Mtns, you're almost on the road. The asphalt conditions are really good. A friend of mine loved Lux, but for another reason. He loved the food.
