I've always remembered the shaft.......
Anyone ever press the pistons on the rods backwards? I'm the president of that club "Never miss a good chance to shut up" Will Rogers

On putting the pistons on backward, If you move
the rod and piston to the other side of the engine the rod will now be installed correctly for the journal chamfer, the piston will be facing the correct way and the only issue will be the number you stamped on the rod will be on the opposite bank. (NO BIG DEAL). Have seen machine shops screw this up many times as Pontiac Number 1 cylinder is not farthest forward on the crank, number 2 is. Hope this saves someone from having to dismount pressed pistons in the future. Tom V.

The first motor I've ever rebuilt. Went in the '71.
Dropped it in, pre-lubed, fired it up, ran it for the customary 20 minute break-in, shut it down, and went to check the oil. Too bad I forgot to put in the curved piece of dipstick tube that goes through the windage tray. The maiden voyage of the new motor was to the parts store to get a pan gasket set. Ended up waiting 'til the next day to pull the motor up about 4 inches so I could pull the pan and put the tube extension in. Tom's right on switching sides -rod chamfer will match crank fillet, but you also have to pay attention to valve reliefs. Two valve pocket pistons like SRP have to be arranged to the intake and exhaust valve order. Swapping directly accross would have P-V problems.

I go by:
Piston face (2 valvereliefs and pocket)is a smile. Install pistons so all smiles are showing upright. a bank of smiles is good. a frown is bad. ------------------------------------------------ If you tink this is silly, then you don't really do engines huh. ------------------------------------------------ Regardless of the external Rod tab ident,The Rod ought to have the bearing tabs facing the camshaft. ------------------------------------------------- Smile & tab-in and you're ready to tap-it and rodcap it. sure, I fogot thepumpshaft once, 12years ago.
And I left it out recently...looks like an accident. Fact is, I install the oilpump first, then the slugs&rods. Then drop the shaft in from the top, with distributor (HEI, shimmed for little shaft movement ) as a final dry-fit for shaft play. Then install pumpshaft from the top. Only way to check for pumpshaft play (equal to Dist shaft play) is to have the oilpump already installed. -------------------------------------------- I'm at that step now, and then the windage tray decision comes to bear, with the dipstick and deeeep pan. Gotta think here. Do I use the full tray, air-nibble it, or toss it to PErf/Parts for Sale...
