Got the entire engine all buttoned up, the Canton tray, Spott's scraper, Milodon pan, Milodon pick up, Dynagear pump, dipstick tube(s), & all seals blueprinted and JAM UP! Looking real good w/ required tolerances.
But guess what I find that I forgot???

My damn oil pump drive!!!
Whaddaidiot!

So now rather than dissassembling the pan assy. I'm thinking about removing the two swaged protrusions on the upper shaft & installing it from above. Anyone think this will present a problem in operation? Obviously we ain't purposely running it upside-down.
Whaacuthink?

No it will work fine from what i have been told.
Althoe i figure they put those bumps on the shaft for a reason...Maby its just in case you flip it upside down so the shaft wont fall out. But i dont see it presenting a problem since the pump is bolted in and the Dist will be bolted in dont seem like there is any way for it to come out.

That's what I was thinking. But gotta run it up the flag pole, just to see who salutes.

Any other opinions? Not about me being an dumbass, we've already established that.

Larry, I read somewhere, but I can't remember where (CRS) to grind off the tangs, drop it in and don't worry about it.

(CRS) = Can't remember ****!

Larry, I'd bet there are more than a few who have frgotten the oil pump shaft at least once, but won't admit it. Some 25+ years ago I was helping my best friend assemble his '67 GTO engine and we forgot the shaft. He ground off the two tangs and dropped it in. Ran for many years and miles like that!

Those tags are to lock the shaft in place so it doesn't come out with the distributor. You don't need them. Just make sure the shaft is in place when you put the distributor back in.

I've done this for years thru many engines with no bad results. Get u a good extended type magnet that will hold the rod by itself, take a lite and note the position of the oil pump drive. Ease the rod in the hole with the magnet and use a long flat head screwdriver to adjust the rod a little to get the rod to drop on the drive. When it drops in the slot hold the rod with ur screwdriver and take the magnet off. Use ur screwdriver to turn the rod and make sure it is in the rite position. U can get the rod off to one side, but iv'e never got one stuck or dropped one into the pan.

wanna race? gimmie the move--

I have dropped one into the pan doing that once...that is one thing I will NEVER forget!
The engine was already in the car and hooked up, it was one of my first rebuilds. Went to put the distributor, and no shaft...talk about pissed. But when I dropped it in the pan... Determined no to pull the engine, it took me about 3 hours to get it out...jacked the engine up, dropped the pan...etc, etc... Good luck and be careful not to drop it!

I have a oil pump driveshaft in my GTO from HO Racing. It doesnt have any tabs at all. I tried to make it fall in the pan while the engine was still on the stand but it wouldnt. Different diameter maybe? You out there Ken?

What a relief! I was contemplating giving up drinking while working on my cars.
Well for a minute or two, anyway.

Larry, Being a "Dumb A$$" would involve running
the engine and wondering why you had no oil pressure. (Chebby guy drove around one time with
an LS-6 engine for a while until he burned out every rod and main after he did not put one in his engine). Have NEVER forgotten to put the oil
pump drive in BUT only because have seen it done several times by others. As you can see you were
not alone on the board in this mistake.

Agree only possible issues would be dropping it in
the pan on installation and having the same thing happen on distributor removal in the car. Tom V.

Pump shaft snafu's:
Put one up in a dark garage from under the car, later when attempting to start the engine it spun a half turn and hit a hard mechanical stop Turned out it had missed the hole and was instead wedged between the rear most cam lobe and the block-one junked cam and a bunch more work.

Forgot one just like Larry and dropped it in from the top. Worked like a charm the first time. Later I pulled the distributor for something and while I had it out decided it would be a great idea to run through the valves. Bumped her over and heard a metallic thud as the rod fell into the pan Not fun getting it out with the motor in the car but it was possible.

Lessons I've learned. You band-aid your mistakes now but if you've my luck it will bite you in the a$$ later when you can least afford it

After having a OP driveshaft break on me and having to pull the motor to change it I ground the tabs off of mine just in case I ever have one break again.

Just did the same thing. Ground mine off too. Just be careful removing distributor. There is an access hole in the back of the block that you can get to and hold the shaft if the engine is out and the the trans or bellhousing is off the block.
