You can tell by the vin if it's a 6 or 8 cylinder - If the last 6 digits start with a 1 - it's an 8 cylinder, if they start with a 6 - it's a 6 cylinder. Can't get any easier than that!

<Every 69 Firebird fender made had those two holes in the bottom.>

My first one had them, my present one has them (my present car, sometime around 1985-86 see the holes?) and the spare left fender I bought for my other car has them.n Also every 9 I have ever seen has them. If they don't have holes, that would be because the metal has been repaired.

I agree that all of the fenders have them. I went back and looked at photos of fenders I know came from 350 and 400 cars and they have all had them, unless the metal was repaired as mentioned by STS.

Thanks instg8er! I'm not sure of the "name" of the paint off of the top of my head. If you are really intrested I can get it for you. I have a v8 shell setting in my garage. I had it blasted and epoxy primered. Rear quarters had a bad patch job on them. I was going to replace them when this project is finished.

Rear spoiler showed up today. Going to see how it fits tonight. I had to send the last one back because of how poorly it fit. I ordered this one through our host and out of the box it looks a lot better than the previous one.

Engine and tranny have been picked up, TA spoiler came in and a slight modification has been made to the overall plan. I'm going to go ahead and have my TA hood painted as well and may use it instead of the 400 hood.

Pictures to come soon!

Thanks Boss!

Tony - the hood is an aftermarket steel hood that I actually found here and bought from another forum member. I'm not planning on making it functional because I honestly don't know what all it takes and I'm unsure of the cost involved. Anyone have any good information on what it takes to make an aftermarket steel TA hood functional? In one of the catalogs for the aftermarket scoops I noticed the tubes were notated that they would not work on an aftermarket hood..?? I asked some of the sales reps what all I would need to make them functional but no one seemed capable of answering that question. (not our host website)

TA hood scoops that are functional dont close. A 400 RA has a lever in the cockpit to open/close the scoops but the TA is permanently open. Sometimes that can be a big problem depending on how & when you use the car. Dirt, snow, rain, bugs, etc.. can make it difficult to maintain. I personally would rather have a closed hood if I cant have a lever to close it, just because I wanna do long distance road trips & cant predict the weather.

Tom - How about a few pictures from the underside of the hood. Showing the tubes connected to the scoops and then the other end of the tubes and how/what they attach to. (upper pan?) If there are upper and lower pans, what they look like and how they are attached.

Thanks!

they are exactly like a stock TA hood except the repo scoops suck. The tubes just slip on the scoop and go back toward the center of the hood. You really cant see anything when the upper pan is on.There is a drawing in the assm man that shows how everything goes together. The Parts Place sells the complete upper and lower pan setup along with the hood, scoops and tubes. He was going to redo the scoops but dont know if he did.Tom

Well... I had to pick the car up from the paint shop today after months of little to no progress. Hopefully will have some update pics soon. It appears i will have to tear back down and redo quite a bit of work.
