Default '69 Bird - Project Reconciliation

A few aog I purchased my fourth Pontiac which is a 1969 Firebird that was originally a carousel red car with white interior. This was a OHC 6 car with a 3 speed, or so I've been told. (I've also been told this was a Sprint car) I haven't ordered a PHS on this car yet to find out exactly how this car was originally equipped. I do know based on the VIN that it was a 6 cylinder car though.

I've attached a few pictures of the car as it was when I purchased it and the last picture showing how far it had settled into the dirt.

Restoration has begun and I'll be adding pictures of the progress that has already been made and the final product when completed soon. Let me know what you guys think.

Default Sheet metal repair completed

Both rear quarters had a small amount of rust around the wheel wells that were patched, both front fenders needed small patches at the bottom of the fenders, the passenger door had a small patch in the front bottom section of the door, the rail along the back glass was patched and the floor pan was replaced with a new 1 piece pan.

Default Hanging the bird

The car was disassembled and hung on the rotisserie for the under carriage to be painted and sealed.

The rear end appears to have been replaced in this car at some point in time with a GM 8.5 10 bolt.

Default On the ground again

Thanks Erik! Here are the pics with the car back on the ground.

Modification List:
Additions to this point:
2" drop spindles
Moroso big block coil springs
WS6 Power steering sector
New drag-link, pitman arm, idler arm and tie rods
1.5" drop rear multi-leafs
G-tech high performance front and rear sway bars
rear shock relocation kit
kyb shocks
energy suspension bushings
SSBC front disc brakes with 12" slotted rotors
C4 corvette discs on the rear with 12" slotted and drilled rotors
subframe connectors
heavy duty traction bars

We mocked the front fender up and put the wheels and tires on to get a feel for the ride height. I was less than pleased. Notice the raised height with the new 1.5" drop leaf springs... After everything is back on the car I'm going to see where the stance ends up and have the springs de-arched. Opinions?

Cool color what is it?
Also do yourself proud and avoid using the Camaro spoiler, stick with the TA if you are going to add one.
Keep the pics coming, we love this stuff....

Nice work!! Very cool color.
What A-body is that in the background?

If the ta & camaro spoilers where the same price I'd probably go with the ta, but for half the price, the camaro spoiler would be a nice addition to my 'far from original' 69 firebird.

Joe: I don't actually know the name of the color. I bought it from a guy who was restoring a Lemans Sport and was giving up on it. He ran across the color while looking through a magazine and then actually bumped into the car and owner at a car show. The guy wrote the code for the color down and told him where to take it to get it mixed.

Spoiler: I actually ordered a TA spoiler for my car and when it came in it didn't even come close to fitting right. We took it over to my friends '68 and it was nearly a perfect fit. I called the manufacturer (according to them the only one that manufactures the spoiler) and explained that I thought they had sent me one for the wrong year and he told me that was impossible. I shipped it back to them and ordered one from PY. Unfortunately, it was back ordered and still has not shipped. Hopefully, when it comes in it will fit correctly.

Engine: The mechanic is supposed to fire the engine on his stand tomorrow and break the cam in and I should be able to pick it up tomorrow evening.

Tony: I think you are talking about the red one? I believe that is a '70 Chevelle. I'm not positive of the year as i was never really into the '70's Chevelles.

Thanks for the replies and positive words!

that car was a Sprint,at least the fenders were

I like that color, but with the rarity of CR I would have redone it that way

The 2 holes at the bottom of the fenders allow clearance for the "Sprint" emblem on the rocker molding. They are not there on the all other models. (base OHC, 350 or 400)

Had I known this was a true Sprint car I would have stayed more original with it. After all of the things I had been told about the car that didn't turn out to be true, I doubted the legitimacy of the report of it being a sprint car. Fortunately, I do know where there is an original overhead cam engine but it isn't the sprint 4 barrel intake. I may latch on to it for the future.

A sprint with auto tranny is pretty damn rare, but it's gotta be a ZL block, and ZH for manual trans.
Either way, a 455 will kick way more ass than a sprint 250.

Every 69 Firebird fender made had those two holes in the bottom. I have 10 69 firebird fenders and they all have them. 2 are off a 69 RA3, 2 are off a 400/400 car, 2 are off a 400 car I parted out in a junk yard and 4 are extras I have picked up. The repos have those holes. If Im wrong the assembly guy must not have gotten the memo.

I'm getting ready to patch up these holes in the fender. Anyone else what to chime in with their thoughts? My car is a 350 hardtop and I'm not sure if their the orginal fenders.
