roller cam re grind. who ?
A am looking to have a new solid roller re ground. It is a larger cam than what I need. big pump gas type cam.
I know that some members have had good luck re grinding cams, cam repair ect. So who does that these days, I have never done it. This cam is a .460 lobe and I am looking for something around .430 for use with 1.7 rockers. Gross valve lift around .730. Net .710-.715 or so. Thanks for any help. |

You could talk to Tim Goolsby at Ultradyne/Bullet cams in Southhaven, MS. They do regrind cams. He has decades of experience and worked for Harold Brookshire, (one of the Godfathers of modern performance camshaft design).

Repeat of what I mentioned the other day within a related topic....
A few years ago I sent a UltraDyne solid roller cam that had one lobe damaged to Tim Goolsby to be reground. The cost was very reasonable, at the time it was $157.50 plus freight. I had it reground with the same .050" duration but I went from a larger lobe lift to a bit smaller, not because of the damage but because I wanted a less aggressive cam. Also it was one of his previous cam cores and not from another cam company. "He has decades of experience and worked for Harold Brookshire, one of the Godfathers of modern performance camshaft design." X2 .

Years ago I had a solid roller reground by Crower, from advertised valve lift of .520, down to .480. The advertised duration went from 320 degrees down to 285 degrees. Back in the early 70s cams were speced at advertised lift and duration, not at .050 lift. The cam was in a Pontiac Stratostreak powered rail dragster before I got it, I tried to run it in a 400, 4 speed 65 GTO, with 3.90 axle, it was a little too radical for a street car, so I had it downsized. It had no low end, and was just beginning to start pulling at 3000 RPM up to 7000, was where it shined. I dropped a valve head, and that was the end of that engine
Price was reasonable, compared to new at the time. It was a custom grind for my car, and engine, I really was pleased with it, and still have it in my parts stash. |

If it is a Comp Cams .440 lobe there are a large number of choices if you go to a .420 lobe. The real question is how deep is your cam core hardened and what can it be reground to?

It is for certain a .460 lobe cam. Comp cam is not getting messed with.
Thinking I will get a hold of Tim G and start from there. The the pro decide if its a good idea and what he thinks he can do with it. The cam is too big for anything I am going to use it for as is so if i can get it turned into something I like for a couple hundred bucks I will do it. |

You didn’t answer my question, maybe you miss understood my question. Is it comp cam we talked about or is it another comp cam. Reason I ask is I have that cam card and it says 440 lube.

Which cam is in the motor now. Or is this for another build down road.

Talked to Bullet and it looks like the .460 lobe can be taken down to .430, that is it. And its better to stay with the same lobe center, only so much room to work with.
Do not know who I talked to then called back for Tim G. He is harder to get a hold of than some of the other techs. So I will have to wait til Monday. |

I think the cam will have to be rehardened if they take that much off.Ask because that usually adds a big expense.Tom

Try extension number 102 for Tim, if he doesn't answer you can leave a massage for him.

You already talked to someone at Bullet correct? If so why do you think Tim will give you different info?

Talked to Tim today. He said the blanks come hardened down to .100 so taking a lobe down .to .430 is ok to do with enough hardness for durability.
The guy knows his stuff. He knows what blanks all the cam manufacturers use. Sending him both cam cards . The one I want ground down is a 108 cam. The cam I would like replicated as much as I can is a 112 cam. He said he could make the 108 cam into a 110 cam. That is as wide as he could go. 200$ to do it. Thats about all I will have into the cam so might as well do it. |

Sent Tim both cam cards. He called back today and told me he can get with 1 degree, opening and closing of the 112 Comp cam. Ground on a 110 vs the 112 and a .430 lobe on the intake.
Only thing is that it will be the last roundup for this cam. if it gets hurt, no repairs. Not enough heat treat left for that to happen. |
