HP is in the heads, dont think it had much in head or cam.Tom

Agree, as I mentioned in my first post, not enough head for an engine with that crank. I'd be more inclined to doctor the heads to appear stockish, put a stock intake on it, go for more of a sleeper look and just enjoy the torque it makes.

Ya i wasn't too impressed either, my 461 made 610tq with northwind (640tq with RPM) Power (hp/tq) is in heads/intake and that 488 seems to be lacking in that department imo.

The whole build is weird. Lot of money spent on rods/pistons. Stock main caps. Junk PRW rockers. No need for a lifter bore brace, cam is puny. Heads need a lot more flow. Victor is used, not the best match. 1 3/4" headers on a 488 is a waste. Do not see the need for a V pump on a engine like this. Guy built a tq monster. But done right he could have had the same tq and a lot more HP. Maybe he wanted a tame 625lbs tq, he did get that. |

This engine would be perfect in a big heavy car, without a lot of gear.

True but a .030 or a .060 455 block would have been better since you are still dealing with a 31/4" main.

lotta complaints about an engine most guys will kill for! reminds me of a bunch of nerds sitting around talking about how the girl their buddy just picked up isn’t that hot, while they go home and play video games and he gets some affection!

If you gave me that engine I would surely take it. If I was buying it at the right price...I would buy it. But, If I were to build it from scratch(or pay someone to build it) I surely would have gone a different way.

For 488 ci with a 4.5" stroke he needed a bore of 4.155" or 0.035" over on the 428 block. Let say he took a 455 0.035" over, he now has 495 ci. How much more HP do you think it would have made? Stan

Yes it does. The bore stroke ratio goes from 0.9233 to 0.93. Neither very close to square.

It's not a bad engine, I just see a lot of "race car" parts on an engine that isn't making "race car" power.
As I already mentioned, if it were mine, I'd doctor the heads to look stock, rip the vacuum pump and Victor intake off, swap the rocker arms, stick a stock intake/carb setup on it, some RA exhaust manifolds, and make the engine appear stock, and then enjoy all the torque it makes. Then it would be very close to what I have in mind to build myself in the future. I probably won't be pushing 11:1 compression though. |

Even on my 505 a 'worked' Performer RPM intake was a dog compared to a Victor. Unless heavy modified a iron factory intake with a 4.500 stroke combo would be big drawback! That said, Wilson Manifolds could open it up and do some extensive and expensive support for that heavy iron piece

I think there is something to be said for putting your money into the bottom end at first. You can always go faster with heads, cam, intake, carb changes without that much work. It's a lot more work to pull the engine out and add a forged crank or good rods!

That is the thing about making one of your builds very public. Folks will give their opinions because the builder obviously wanted them to. He made it public. Have a thick skin. |
