Try my EUN Search page.

Input 1965 for the Year

It would help having the engine cast date.

Don't really like the looks of the W on the block stamp.
Just in that picture , maybe better pics would look more acceptable.
Would ask for a flurry of clear close ups on that.

3 weeks
make a freshly poured block casting in Michigan - yada yada cool down , machining
assembled into a complete running engine , prepped and painted.
train loaded to Kansas City
unload train and put into supply chain reserve
sitting next in line after previous inventory stock depleted
at a mfg plant in Kansas City
seems Really Tight.

Different story if it were a PMD Plant car.
Those are the ones where 1-3 weeks is typical on non-exotic/non-low production engines.

The WS block stamping and date range will be up to your personal discretion.

The EUN is going to run parallel with all others of that casting date range.
They don't get tampered unless someone has the P-o-P to match up with it.
That one looks completely virgin EUN
Without P-o-P its a dead end on a 65

If you had P-o-P and it matched the EUN , then you might investigate the date code range versus EUN of similar other date code samples - to see if it was an out of synch forgery on the EUN.

The only guy who has some voodoo on EUN's is basically limited to 1970 models. iirc

I would really approach this car with a mentality it was put back from scratch and done as closely as possible.
Trim Tag consideration too.

Johnta1, I used your website EUN search and came up with a match. All the correct info appeared EXCEPT the engine date code was blank.. Good or bad? You said it would help, but it did not appear. I have not used that tool before so I am learning.. Thank you.. "Bill"!

If I don't have that info, I can't put it in the database.

Mainly have to see what the other surrounding engines are and hopefully they have the dates.
(it'll give you an idea of the range)

Bill, to clarify, I think John W. added your EUN from what you've reported, wasn't previously listed. John W. correct me if I'm wrong.

You can plug in 1965 only and see all the EUNs he has logged for '65. Unfortunately, no others with a close EUN to compare cast dates..

You mentioned the cast date is 3 weeks prior which I take to be approx. Jan 15.

The assumption is that the satellite plants will typically have more lag time than those installed at the Pontiac Plant.

But I've logged a lot of '64s and it isn't always the case in '64. Some satellite plant builds have what would seem like impossibly tight block cast dates relative to Time Built codes. 3 weeks at a satellite plant in '64 relative to the Time Built code is pretty common. Your Time Built code is 01D. But the Date Shipped looks like it might be 2/3/65? The production date is usually about the same as the Date Shipped.

Based on my assumptions and comparing to my '64 records, nothing amiss that I see.

I agree with BVZ, if the P-O-P exists then a restorer knew the original EUN making it possible to restamp a match. But without a P-O-P or other record of the original EUN, you can't ever know for sure. Only whether a particular EUN is plausible.

I can't say that this one is because I have no '65 data. But if it was a '64 block, I can tell you that the EUN range for January '64 cast blocks would be from about 220000 to about 275000.

There are always outliers, a rare January cast block could have sat unassembled for an unusually long time and show up with an EUN normally associated with a much later cast block.

The reverse is impossible. If the first January cast block was cast on the day EUN 220000 was being assembled, it would be impossible (aside from a stamping error) for that block to wind up in an engine with a lower EUN.

One more question. I know I have read here in a thread that the true meaning of the trim tag date, in my case 01D, is somewhat of a mystery. What is this date meaning? Beginning of production, as it rolls out the door, or something else???

Body trim tag date is when Fisher Body sends out the body to chassis assembly line.

AFAIK

THANKS to everyone for your input. The 65 is setting in my garage now. So I am putting together a list of what I think needs to be done this winter. I am fighting off my impulses and wanting to keep the car drivable.

Beautiful car and color combination.

I see Michael Bay took the engine photo
