your arent asking about the options, youre asking about the look of the tag its self right?
its fresh and new looking....like a repop..i dunno...id compare the font to a real known tag, font looks fat and some of the letters are a diff from tags ive seen..but i am no 65 expert.....for sure get the PHS..the rivets dont look set to me right in the pic.. could be lighting and paint build up..but sure needs an experts eye... the detail is wiped out, and a simple google of 65 GTO trim tags made in kansas, theres noticeable diffs to me like the W and the P and the 3s..and the depth of the stamps and how fat the stamps are in your pic..i dunno..the more i stare the more i can pic out..and i may be way off..i dont collect 65 info..and i cant find an 01D 65 tag to compare it just could be the angle of the camera too..it does look a little OFF to me

Yes, it does look sketchy?
Compare 2 KAN built 65. 1) a real one. 2) ???? ,not very crisp.

RePOP tag & rivets
and have seen better repops than that one - it must be an older / first edition Likely for the color - but maybe even for the GTO code too PHS for the Win |

PHS came back. All is legit!! I still agree and believe somewhere along the line, the orig. tag was damaged or remover for whatever reason. I will putty up the rivets and it is what it is, an original driveline P-P 218 3X2 4sp. THANKS for the comments. I'll admit I was wondering.....

That's Great News on the PHS / BHC !
Have heard of numerous "legit" reasons for TT replacements. Common theme is an un-alert sandblast operator. The aluminum degrades fast in that scenario. You could get a better replacement than that now - as another option - if desired. About $300 with rivets |

Congrats on the find...PHS is such a great resource for these cars.
My car is one of those that had the original tag destroyed by the sandblaster (according to the PO)...It didn't bother me when I had the PHS in hand. Does anybody have a recommendation on who to use for the reproduction? |

Aside from the missing putty at the rivets, didn't strike me as "off" but I also have not researched '65s like I have '64s.
But here is another thing to think about with restored cars. I have come across several GTOs in the past that were most likely stolen when relatively new back when auto theft was rampant. Thieves would launder these cars (unless they were chopping them altogether) by removing the original VIN tag and replacing it with a "clean" tag from a wreck. Thieves paid no attention to the Data Plate, nobody knew what those codes meant anyway so they left the original Data Plate alone, just swapped the VIN tag. Today, these VIN tag swaps become obvious because the PHS for the VIN will come back for a car that is not at all like the one represented by the Data Plate. Most often the Time Built code is wrong, often the Assembly Plant on the Data Plate differs from the VIN, not infrequently the VIN will be for a non-GTO while the Data Plate is for a GTO. One time we uncovered a car that had a mismatch of Model Years, I think a '67 VIN tag with a '66 Data Plate. Sadly, these cars may be very correct and desirable GTOs with original drive trains in some cases but the VIN tag mismatch makes them almost worthless. Frame VIN stamps could uncover the original VIN but then you still have to deal with an incorrect VIN tag. Not to mention that uncovering the original VIN could lead to forfeiture of the car especially where the loss was not insured and the original owner is still alive. A few cars that have been returned to rightful owners after a theft recovery decades after the theft have made national news, so it DOES happen. Anyway, today, a car with a mismatched VIN & Data Plate can be "corrected" by a reproduction Data Plate. The car can then be restored to match the PHS record for the VIN and the mismatch obliterated. This is especially worth doing if the VIN represents a GTO. Personally, I think this is a poor choice. The history of the actual car which would include a theft story is lost. And a car that was totaled when relatively new is "resurrected" decades later because VINs of totaled cars were not recorded the way they are today. Nobody would know that the VIN tag is not on the car it was born with. Just thought I'd mention this as one more reason why a repro Data Plate might be installed. |

Bill, my log is for '64 only. This EUN would fit very well for a January build in '64.
'65 production was slowed by the early strike but in the end surpassed '64 totals. My gut would say this is a reasonable EUN for an 01D '65. Did you ask about the block cast date? You can also check other engine casting date codes. Hopefully some others here have '65 EUN records to compare. |
