Default Northwind intake/air cleaner in 68 GTO

I stuck my old drop base air cleaner with a 4" tall filter on a Northwind 4150 intake with a wedge spacer on the 850 Holley and it clears the stock hood with ease. That was one of my worries since I measured it with no spacer against a TII with a 1" spacer and it was a hair taller. The TII/spacer set up was close to the hood but the RPM was closer with no spacer.

The spacer on the Northwind is a Moroso wedge that is about 7/8" in the back and 3/8" in the front. The Northwind carb pad is flat unlike the TII & RPM that are angled so the carb leans forward.

This is a shot thru the scoop. I used to run a Ram Air setup with the stock intake/Q-Jet and the hood plate is still there. The filter lid fit right inside the plate hole
And is about 1\2" from the hood at the carb stud. I always ran a solid mount on the drivers side and it keeps the engine in place.

I'm going to graft the outer ring from a single snorkel base to the 1.75" drop aftermarket base for that "sleeper" look. The carb vents are over 2" from the lid with this setup.

Looks great!! Couple of Q's:
A.) why is the spacer a wedge?
B.) is that cover (last pic) your cover or do you have a full cover that covers the base?
C.) did you powder-coat the Northwind or did you paint it with engine enamel?

I am debating whether to keep using my Northwind in my '69 Bird (stock 400 hood). I would like to use a completely stock 400-V8 Poncho air cleaner.

Thanks!
Brian.

It seems most have good results from running a spacer on the Northwind and I didn't think a flat spacer would fit so I tried that wedge. The Northwinds' carb pad is flat while most other intakes have the carb angled down toward the front so I thought the wedge would give the air cleaner a better fit. Looking closer I think a traditional 1" spacer might fit but I haven't had time to try it. I think running a larger filter on a big motor is more important than trying to jam a spacer under the carb with a short filter, so whatever works with the 14x4 filter will stay.

That lid is just a generic open element part. The stock large diameter lid won't fit through the hole in the ram air pan or else I'd use it.

I used Duplicolor engine primer, paint, and clear on the intake and heads. With aluminum heads the paint doesn't burn off or discolor much.

I don't know if the 67-9 f-bodies have the hood clearance the a-bodies do. What air cleaner do you have now?

Default Northwind intake/air cleaner in 68 GTO

It is a K&N low profile (no more than 3" high) with a drop base setup. Ran atop a Holley 750 mech-secondary with a 1" spacer. I want to try using the K&N element in the stock 400/V8 air cleaner. Guess I could always modify it to work (cut/weld up a stock a/cleaner).

I plan to paint the Northwind med-Pontiac blue.
