Default headliner removal

what is the best, neatest way to remove the headliner.
the one in my 66 was a dusty mess.
this time it's my 71 which has had a much easier life so i'm thinking the insulation may be in good condition under there, but what is the recommendation?

Are you going to replace the headliner with a new one?

Just so you don't make a big mess in the car I'd put down over all the interior you can a sheet or blanket or plastic tarp down to catch anything that may came down just to keep it as clean as you can when it comes down.

Don't worry about trying to keep it clean with tarps or anything else. you will be moving all over the place while removing it- and the car will get dirty anyway- this is a messy job, and you'll be cleaning afterwords, so don't worry about that upfront.

1. Remove seats. Don't try and do this with the interior in place, its a major hassle.
2. bring shop vac with you
3. remove trim & welting around edges of headliner, all the way around.
4. start at the sides and peel the headliner back till its loose. If there are mouse turds or other nastiness up there, use shop vac to suck it up before it rains on you as you take it loose.
5. repeat at the windshield & rear window end- take loose and let hang.
6. start at the front or rear and take the bows loose from the car and let headliner hang down with the bows in it.
7. once the whole thing is down, take it out of the car, then remove bows from headliner. mark their placement w/ masking tape as they come out so you can replace them in the right order in the new headliner.
8. use shopvac to clean up the inside of the car.
9. drink adult beverage of your choice.

:-)
