Default 69 Pure Stock RA IV GTO runs its best ever..

Just back from the F.A.S.T./FACTORY STOCK DRAGS at VMP this past weekend and couldn't believe how great that track is. Ran a personal best 12.20/115mph.

Sure hope that more and more py'rs join us next year to raise the Pontiac car count at the growing number of events held across the country.

Rick M's RA II Firebird was blistering the track with mid 11 sec passes!!!!

This is the closest I got to beating him. It was all fun......all day long!

East coast gang put on a spectacular banquet after the racing was done!

I was just reading about the FAST events in an old issue of super chevy. That would be a lot of fun to attend.

VMP?

Without revealing trade secrets, how do you get a car to run that quick in "pure stock"?
How stock is pure stock?

Those cars out of the factory ran 99's or so

Nice job Bruno. I saw RM out at Maple Grove a few weeks earlier doing some T&T on the '68 - awesome ride - so is yours.

Ricks RAII firebird was just finished a few weeks back and was at the Pure Stocks that Dan Jensen puts on and was running 11.8? and the engine and car builder Scott Tieman was hoping to get a bit more out of it and get it into the 11.50's that is pretty fast on stock tires. He was runnning against vipers at the local track and they could not hook up and did not run as fast as he did. He must have 150 runs on that car and every time it gets faster.

Thanks for the kind words guys. VMP stands for Virginia Motorsports park.
The original owner of my car ran consistent 12.60's in NHRA stock eliminator class in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The selling dealer had Milt Schornack fly in to put a race tune up on the 3 cars in the dealers racing stable.

Thin head gaskets, ignition and carb set on KILL were a few of the mods of the day.

Today's PURE STOCK cars use the NHRA stock eliminator rule book,X pipes with 2 1/2" exhaust, full blueprint and balancing, No-Hop bars on the rear diff. as well as the latest valvetrain technology if your budget allows it. It takes lots of practice and trial and error with tire pressures to become fast and consistent. I've learned lots from fellow competitors................great group of people anxious to help.

5 or 6 "Canadians" can pry tips from other racers too!

I really enjoy this form of Drag Racing because it's heads up against a car that qualified less than a .10 from your best pass and the fact that all types of Musclecars are represented. Nothing like letting a Mopar take a 2 car length jump at the start only to be freight trained by a hard charging Ram Air IV at the big end.

Interesting, funny how they can use the words "pure stock" and then allow x pipes etc.

Wonder what the quickest blueprinted "true stock" (stock exhaust, compression, cam, valves, timing, tires everything) GTO runs?

Never really took to drag racing, too much of a softy on the cars.

X pipes are encouraged because they double(kinda) as a drive shaft loop.I have owned my GTO since 1987 and if there was no pure stock drags.I'm not sure what would do with my car.The NHRA "stock" keeps the people honest....or I should say most people.

And this is the closest I've ever come to beating that Pure Stock RAIV GTO of yours.

(And I'm not even running my Polyglas G70's on that run! )

I thought that a creative, "honest" and effective form of gray area cheating was what this sport was all about.

We'd love to have something to chase you with, but we'll have to see...another red/red '69 RAIV in the works! anyway....love that mean green machine! lol Take care! Ron

Following "NHRA Stock" would not be close to stock at all!

I think the FAST rules are tighter than NHRA. NHRA "stock" classes may run cams with close to stock lift but they run 270+ durations @.050", minimal head cc's, max over bore, stroke etc. Also use 8", 5,500 stall coverters etc.

I like the FAST class more than NHRA Stock. They represent the potential of a "stock street car". NHRA is the potential of a "stock race car".
