That is correct, the other end of the wire is just sitting there. It has a metal "slide in" type connector on the end and looks like it just slipped out of somewhere. I've never noticed it before so...

I was flagged down today by another motorist who told me my right side brakelights wer out on my 66 GTO. I checked it out and sure enough, he was right. I replaced all the bulbs on the right side....
