Please help identify transmission
 

Hi. I got this transmission with a 1967 firebird project but I need to identify it so I can obtain the correct transmission cross member. I can't find the tag # on Google. Can you help? Thanks

You are not leaving anything to go on. Could be anything from soup to nuts. At least post a photo of the pan.

That’s a long tail shaft TH400 from a B-body big Pontiac.

I’d be looking for a short tail shaft trans. Otherwise you’re paying extra to shorten the driveshaft. The proper crossmember for a short shaft TH400 is readily available. To use the long tail shaft trans you can move the crossmember rearward and drill new holes I suppose, but again a custom length driveshaft is needed.

I would definitely find a short shaft trans, the driveline angles aren’t really ideal once you shorten the driveshaft to compensate for the incorrect long tail shaft trans, otherwise the factory would have used the long tail shaft trans to begin with in the F-body Firebird and A-body GTO/Le Mans/Tempest.

As long as the bellhousing on the new trans you find is BOPC (Buick/Olds/Pontiac/Cadillac) bolt pattern like the trans in your pictures it will bolt up directly.

A Chevy bolt pattern trans will work if you use an adapter plate, but the more popular Chevy transmissions are more expensive usually compared to ones that bolt up to a Pontiac.

is the UNIQUE th400 dip stick and tube for the 67-9 Firebird, you will need
that may cost as much as the th400 core

Thank you for the valuable info. I really appreciate it. I've always been a Ford man but I decided to get this 67 firebird as a surprise Christmas gift and I'm not totally familiar with GM.
One more question if I may. Does this photo look like what the t400 should look like that I need for my firebird? Thank you

The pic did not enlarge well on mine, but yeah that certainly looks like a short tail TH400 to me. Doesn't have a bolt hole at top of bellhousing so I'm sure its a BOP TH400. Go for it.

That’s a short tail shaft TH400 but it’s for a Chevy.

I’ve enlarged your picture below. Next to it is a picture of a short tail shaft Chevy TH400 I have sitting in my garage, you can see both are the same.

As already mentioned above you’re going to need a compatible dipstick tube and dipstick. I recently installed a short tail shaft TH400 from a ‘70 GP into a ‘68 Firebird that I recently sold, the ‘70 GP dipstick tube fit perfectly so I’d bet any ‘69’- ‘72 GP dipstick setup would work.

Do you know what auto trans was stock in the 67 firebird behind a 326? Was it a t350? I appreciate all of your advice?

The ST-300 2-speed was used behind the 326. A TH350 bolts directly in place of the ST-300, super easy swap.

I have run a long shaft T400 in a 69 GTO forever. The drive shaft was shortened, but it was one custom made for a short shaft Ford Toploader transmission.

Some of the cases where they bolt to block have a inside rib that reinforces those top 2 bolt holes. I'd keep,just me, and rebuild with short shaft and tail housing. Bought those parts from cliff last year. Trans in race car was a long shaft rebuilt to short.

You can just use the short tail housing and output shaft on the TH400. I would keep that TH400 Tranny if I were you. Those are the strongest TH400 cases made by GM. They have the metal vent tube, support ribs on the bellhousing, 8 bolt pump, and the pan rail is thicker. The output shaft area is also beefier.
