All sounded rather healthy Harry, BUT numbers with mild description of combo's would be helpful. Great sounding Pontiacs anyway.

Those videos came out much better than the mine did with the stationary camcorder.
Dil is being way too modest - he founded the club and was the dictator, I mean "president", of the Inland Empire GTO Club for many years. The '72 GTO is owned by Rick Haney, and is an original HO 455 with the rock-crusher 4-speed. It retains its original engine, trans, and rearend. The engine had come close to being destroyed by a speed shop down in Los Angeles - and it quickly earned the name "The Engine from Hell" as we got into it. You name it, and the shop had screwed it up from a crank cut out of index with egg shaped journals, a cam so tight in the bearings that liquified the babbit, and decks that were .004" low on each end. We obtained a new crank from Ken Brewer, a custom HFT cam from Ken Crocie and had the block square decked. The 7F6 heads were milled .048" to raise the compression up to 9.3:1, and the heads were home ported and new springs and SS valves were installed. The 66 GTO owned by Tim Rankin has a 428 with 6X heads, and also has a custom SFT cam from Ken Crocie. Tim is still chasing a few demons trying to get the horsepower up, but he is making progress. We're coming to the conclusion that while the heads were ported before he got them, the port work has actually subtracted horsepower from even stock heads. I'm sure it won't be long and the heads will be history. The 64 wagon is owned by Jim Miholick and is a very cool ride. It also has a 428 with Kaufman heads hooking up to a Richmond 6-speed trans. Jim had an oil burning problem on the trip to and from Harry's shop and Jim has now traced it to a combination of aluminum valley pan and a defective PVC valve. This is the second bad valve we have come across, and both have been AC valves from one of our large Pontiac Suppliers (not PY). The 67 GTO is owned by Bruce Rhoads, and has a 428 short block that went from Bruce, to me, and back to Bruce. JE Sportsman pistons and BME aluminum rods. Heads are port matched 96's that are gasket matched but no port work. He's running a big SFT cam that he got from Dil that seems to work very good despite the low 9:1 compression. This combination runs much better than the sum of its parts. It's always enjoyable spending the day down at Harry's shop. |
