As a matter a fact you're the one that started talking to me . I was trying to help the op just like you were. You started in with me by quoting me and telling me i was wrong..

And if i was calling you out it wouldnt be with the 4 cylinder . It would be with my Ventura .... But i have no interest in that...

If you want Polar to be dead then maybe you shouldnt act like him anymore... Just sayin...

I will be at Norwalk this year so i will stop by and say hello....
I sure will ..

My Cometic 409 gaskets were this way I used a small sheet metal hand punch to enlarge them slightly. They would not sit flat as delivered. Funny thing the 409 Felpros were the same way but not an old Victor I had, needed the extra thickness of a 0.051 .

they probably make the holes tight on purpose. I have ran into the same thing. Seen some sets that did not fit the cyls well and filing the dowel holes one way or another makes the gaskets set on the block to my liking.

also pays to slip the proper drill bit in the dowel receiver holes on your heads and trial fit the gaskets on the head for a look-see.

I wonder if the old tooling is getting worn out. I dont remember them being this way back a few years ago.. With the one i just put on my 4 cyl , the holes were a thousndth wider apart then the dowels. Made the gasket not lay flat at all...

Maybe they were made to fit tight over the dowel pin holes for a "reason".
We use a lot of them on different brands of engines and they all fit tight.

Engineers bicker with other engineers for a reason.

Engineers Try to "Do the Right Things" with their designs. The issues come from a lack of knowledge on what the Engineer is supposed to accomplish, a lack of money to have proper "dies" make the parts, basic screw-ups with the software in the computers making the parts, or production people just getting tired and when they "load the part" into the stamping machine it is not perfect and the 'between hole distance' grows slightly or is slightly under spec.

And lastly, Pontiac never made perfect parts either (EVERY TIME) so mods are required sometimes.

Always easy to blame the Engineer for the issue but there are lots of inputs into the parts design and manufacture process.

Better to just take the time to do it right with the "adjustment" process. In this case filing one hole slightly for a few minutes.

When you force parts, being in a hurry to get stuff done, you either do not care, or you have no interesting in making the part "mesh" properly with the other parts in the system. You are just throwing parts together. Either due to lack of knowledge or the $$$ are the driver if you are working on another persons engine.

So let the bashing continue.

I used to work for a large at home service company. Quite often the spouse at the home would kindly inform me that her husband was an engineer, I'd always ask for which railroad.

Toms post is spot on.

Now if someone can just blame it on one head or another we can continue this bickering in the PY way

There are some really good engineers out there and some that couldn’t engineer themselves out of a paper bag......common sense goes a long way.

Agree, And I have followed the common sense approach for my 40 years as a Engineer. I try to post common sense advice in all of my technical threads, but not necessarily in all RACE CLUB threads.

Common Sense can go a long way at learning how to do one thing well but at some point a high school graduate is not going to understand Physics, Calculus, and Metallurgy concepts the same as a Engineer with 30+ years of experience.
That being said, I provide the same info to both, just figure out a different way of presenting the info so that they get it.

Teaching is one of the requirements of Senior Engineers in Ford. Be it new college graduates or Technicians with 20 years of experience.
Easy to Type a Funny Face, harder to help someone understand a concept. Bragging is the easiest of all especially if you have a engine that is 150 stronger vs the average competitor and you Bracket Race.

Until you can do the job, and have done it in the past, don't throw rocks at Engineers, that just smells of ***** envy.
