Default M-13 Transmission Bearing Retainer Seal

I'm having trouble installing a new seal in my bearing retainer. It is going to squeeze in hard and I don't want to ruin the new seal in the process. The seal is rubber and spring-loaded and I have sanded down the retainer and the circumference of the seal but still doesn't want to squeeze in. ANY TRICKS OR SUGGESTIONS?

ALSO, Does the solid, flat side of the sael (first picture) face the retainer leaving the open side (second picture) facing the transmission?
