Just curious what value if any there maybe in an engine that has become available to me. As far as I can tell it’s an early 72 date stamped Y3 400 which I’m guessing puts it in a 73 GTO? It’s complete carb (Holley) to pan, no accessories, couple brackets but might be stuck. Has an Edelbrock manifold and the heads are 1969 date coded but I couldn’t make out the casting numbers. Only thing I saw was one head had a 5 on the right exhaust port and the other had a 6 on the same port but I don’t believe those are relevant. Just curious what it’s worth assuming it’s a useable core.

Also has a TH350 attached I’m not particularly interested in.

A Y3 code is a 73 or 74 block code.on a 73 400 is a 230 Hp 4 bbl motor that could have been in any body type Pontiac, but the GTO would have without question have a Tb400 trans.
In 74 Y3 was a manual trans code.

That being said these blocks are a good starting point for a build.

$400 to $600 if it turns freely.

$100 to maybe $250 if it’s stuck.

BOP TH350 cores are about $50 to maybe $100.

Why is it so hard for people who have been in this hobby for years or perhaps decades to throw out a price estimate? Every time I see a thread like this 10 people will post something without putting any numbers out there.

I never post prices so as to not effect steering any results, actually I don’t understand why people who make post like this don’t just take 5 more minutes of effort on there own to use this sites search feature to possible turn up info on there own.

I think your about right I was going to say $500 for a good complete core a little more if it’s 71 or older and a 400. 350 less 455 little more. My 2¢

Steve, sorry if I offended you with my question. As it happens, the forum seems to dislike the word “value” as it says it’s too broad so not a lot came with searching. Maybe I’m missing something with the search function. I’m open to suggestions if there are any.

As for the trans, I only glanced at it. Not positive it’s a 350. Could be a 400. I won’t get a chance to look at the stuff again for a few weeks.

Either transmission would have the same core value actually.

Some years back I was selling a few GM automatic transmission cores to a guy who regularly rebuilds them along with some American V8s to sell to European hot rodders. I had 2 Chevy Powerglides and a BOP TH350 and TH400. He took them all except for the TH400, said his customers didn’t want those. Anyway all 3 cores brought $150 total, and would likely bring about the same today.

I had a heck of a time selling the last TH350 I had. Might have to take it if I get the engine though.

A Y3 code 400 was used in many 1972 G/P's. Maybe only later build ones, but I've seen several.

Ok thanks. I’m not really hung up on what it’s out of. I just assumed with an early casting date of 72 it was likely in a 73 model year and the info I found suggested the GTO was the only use that year. I appreciate the info from everyone though. The price is right so I may pick it up and see if I can get it loose if it’s really stuck.

Grandam1979, I’ll let you know if I end up picking it up. It sounds like it’ll be a few weeks possibly.

Well, just to update, I finally got the engine and transmission. Trans is going to grandam1979 this weekend and without a lot of effort I got the engine to turn over and it spins freely now. It will be for sale in the Toledo, Ohio area if anyone is interested. Thanks again for the replies.
