Default Crankshaft oil lip damage

Just looked at a machined crank that came out of a engine. It was built by previous owner.
Just noticed a chip out of the metal lip on the crank next to where the rear seal goes.

I'm going to recommend buyer to turn another crank instead of using this one
See pics and let me know what you think

It's a 400.

Toss it in the scrap bin. That amount of corrosion alone would make me question whether it would clean up without going excessively undersized.

400 cranks aren’t hard to come by, I’d definitely start with a better one.

That's what i thought. I've got 400 cranks, so no problem.

Even without the busted lip with that rust pitting that would be left after a polish job would never allow a seal to do its job!

THAT is a "machined crank that came out of an engine"??? Well, sure, it was machined...by Pontiac; did it come out of the engine in 1978?

The chip missing wouldn't be a problem for me. At most, a simple braze/MIG-weld job, then grind most of the braze or weld back out. Easy. Not structural. That flange is little more than an oil slinger.

But as said, the condition of the rest of it makes that crank questionable. How do the journals mic once the rust has been polished-off?

Why bother to mess with it . There are plenty of small journal cranks out there.

I'll make a table or something out of it, along with the 2 pc crank I found in a 78 400.

Preston, the ONLY time we would attempt to salvage a crank in that condition was if it was an extremely rare crank or if the owner insisted in using the original crank.
