Question Tires

I have a 1962 Grand Prix & need to purchase new tires. Would like to get white walls but probably have to buy Cooker's. Has anyone had any dealing with them & how are their tires. Thanks.

I used Mastercraft, I believe they are made by Cooper tire. Nice looking whitewall, and reasonably priced.

What size are those Mastercrafts? The largest 14" tire I've found from regular tire sources is 215/75-14, which is on the small size for our cars. 225/75-14 is closer to the 8.00/8.25/8.55-14 tires they ran originally.

I went with 15" wheels as a result of a disc break swap, so maybe those aren't so feasible for anyone on 14s. These are 235/75/15.

I bought a set of 1" whitewall HR78-14's from Diamondback about 18 mos ago. They look and perform very nicely. They were very easy to deal with, they custom made the 1" ww and I had the tires in about 2 weeks.
These were for a 63 wagon.

Changing to 15" wheels probably is the best thing to do.

The wheel vintiques series 12 15 x7 were inexpensive at the time, I'm thinking around $70 each then, ($95 on summit now). Those cooper mastercraft IV were around $100 each IIRC, so it was a relatively affordable upgrade.

It looks from the OPs' picture that he has 8-lugs, as I do. The cost to convert to 15" rims is about $1k, so the Diamondback (or Coker) 14" tires are a less expensive option. My Diamondbacks (Auburn tires) came in under $950, including shipping.

Question for the 62 owners. If you have 15 inch wheels on your car: what specific size tires do you have on he car now and how does it look/sit? I discovered my car has an unfortunate mix of those expensive BOP chrome 8-lug wheels. It has 15X7 wheels on the front and 15X8 on the rear. It has 235X75X15 on the rear and 225X75X15 on the front. I have owned the car 7 years and just discovered the wheel width difference last week when I began looking for new tires. The rear tires have very tight clearance to the quarter panel. About 1/2-5/8". The car sits fine but I would like to have 4 tires the same size I think. Would like a little more clearance in the rear as well if possible. Car has about 450HP so 6.5" of tread or more would be great. Difficult situation.
