Default Ideas for building a street 455 for my 63 Lemans

I'm slowly working to get my 63 running. I have 2 good 455s. One is a low mileage 74. I'm thinking changing the heads to 6X( I have 16s,96s,7m5, couple sets of 6Xs). Intake if all goes to plan will be the new 'bathtub' intake. Trans will be rebuilt M40 with L88 type convertor. I was wondering if stock (exhaust)6Xs will be good? No cam selected yet, that's another selection I need advice on. I'm thinking(cost) flat tappet hydraulic. I just want nice driver I can have some fun. I could put my spare SD in it but keeping that for spare for other 2 cars. Thanks Bob.

There where two different 96 castings, I am assuming you have the D exh port version and if that’s the case then those are the heads I would rebuild an use on the 455.

my car is a 4 speed car.3.42 first gear and 2.68 in the back, coming to a rolling type stop I just leave in 2nd gear. Can drive in 4th gear at 1500 RPMs and just feed the throttle.Your car is much lighter.FWIW,Tom

Agree 96’s would be best choice.

6X heads have hardened exhaust seats, screw in studs, guide plates and the -8 versions are 101cc which makes a little under 9.5 to 1 in a 455 with flat top pistons and tight squish. The -4 version has smaller chambers, most I've checked were right at 92cc, but I'v e seen a few sets as small as 88cc.

96's as mentioned are also a good choice.

7M5 heads are horrible, HUGE chambers and I can't remember finding a set where one or both weren't cracked across the exhaust seats on the two inner exhaust valves.........

My 455 (in signature below) is just 8.3:1, unported "66" castings. Still have pressed-in studs, stock rockers & adjusting nuts work fine with the lower-lift cam. Runs cools, uses the cheapest gas I can find. 3.08 gears, stock torque converter. I've only had to track once, and the track was poorly prepped - even with 255/60-15 MT drag radials I was blowing the tires away if I launched with more than about half-throttle. Transmission was screwing up and shifting WAY late, as well. I still ran several 13.2's @ 102.8-104mph, with 60' in the 1.88-1.91 range.

It is a VERY "nice driver" combination, IMHO. My wife even enjoys driving it.
