Dash removed - must do’s?
Opted to pull the dash out in my 70 GTO during a Vintage Air kit install. Want to clean up/“restore” the gauge cluster (non-rally gauges).
What are some “must-do’s” while I have the dash removed? *budget-minded, don’t have an unlimited supply of money for custom one-off/expensive stuff. Mostly “DIY” stuff. *debating converting to rally gauges, but not sure what all would be involved? *stock-appearing is not important. For example, considering white-face gauge overlays: http://www.whitegauges.net/products/...ce-Gauges.html *LED dash lighting recommendations?

First if you can, get a replacement or rebuilt wireing harness. I just finished doing mine and feel very lucky that the car did not burn to the ground. I found house style twist on splices and burnt wires in the middle of the under dash wire harness. Second lubricate the speedometer cable, you are already there. Third, replace every light bulb in the dash, it is always a pain getting to them. Fourth take the vacume cleaner to all of the old insulation that is probably turning to dust waiting to fall.

I have my dash down as well to do the Vintage Air - had the dash pad recovered by Al Knoch Interiors and have a new dash bezel going in too. Also bought the OER Rally Gauge conversion kit, repro vent balls and center vent, Classic radio being installed as well. My dash harness doesn't look bad to me from what I can tell. Will also be doing Dynamat type product on firewall and floor while everything is out.

If you have the dash out, I strongly recommend installing a new firewall pad and/or some sound deadening and heat deflection material.
It makes a huge difference.

Keep the indicator lights and put engine mounted, mechanical oil pressure and water temperature gauges. Those modern gauges give too much information, trouble is most of it is misinformation. You will notice the red light before the gauge needle. Besides, those modern gauges have lots of issues and look weird.
The only gauge set up I ever liked was the Sun gauges from the late sixties.. Last edited by 389; 04-25-2022 at 05:43 PM. |
