1970 TA center console optional?
Hello all, recently acquired a 1970 Trans Am with black deluxe interior option and 4 speed manual. The car has been previously "restored" and some kind of console put in, with the power window switches in place. Car has manual windows. I have the PHS documentation and do not see anything in regards to the console. Was it standard or optional on 1970 TAs and how would I know if the car came with it? Thank you.

The console was an option. My 70 has one, and it's listed on the PHS.

Thanks. Do have the PHS, all that is listed is:
RADIO P/B BATTERY-HD ANTI-FREEZE SPEAKER R/ST CUSTOM TRIM Does that mean no console, otherwise it would have been listed as a separate option? |

Perhaps they have slipped one in to to use easily and to cover possible carpet holes that some brands automatically had there. Easy to check if it had factory console mounting brackets, even without the paperwork or window switches.

A no console 4 speed is a definite factory build configuration. Although, I like the place for the right elbow with console, I would put that one back to no console. It is a serious, all business, no fluff look. ****LIKE****

Having seen pictures of no console 4 speed cars, I do like the look also. That also means that I have one less thing to source 🙂 Thanks for the input folks

It may be there for a reason, lift it out for a look.

I also would add that the custom interior with no console is double cool.

Consoles were optional on automatics too ! , even Trans Am's . How is your interior?

The interior looks complete at first glance, haven't dug into it yet though. The dash has a crack on top, and some warping. Door panels look original with the comfort weave inserts, have some minimal waviness on top. Seats are correct but are not wearing the deluxe covers. Steering wheel vinyl is pretty worn.

Not a 70. But, 71 makes for a clean hump

Looked under the console and indeed no brackets in the back to attach it to the floor. The bad is that there is a sizable cut out in the carpet in the shifter area so I cannot remove the console without dealing with it. From the last picture there looks to be a separate piece of carpet covering the hump. Is that the case? Can it be sourced from somewhere on its own? Thanks.

Front and rear carpet as were 2-piece in early years.

I have a Lucy Blue 70 T/A with standard blue interior and a column shift. I have a bunch of paperwork from the original owner where he special ordered it. It's my understanding he expected it to come in as a floor shift with no console, but instead it came in as a column shift. He wasn't happy.
Apparently column shift automatic only came on standard interior when you didn't order a tape deck. Ordering a tape deck automatically got you a console, and ordering deluxe interior automatically got you a console. I've been hanging onto an excellent low mileage deluxe blue interior so I could convert to floor shift. |

Also notice that the console and no console shifter sticks are different.

3 piece...there is a vinyl filler between back seats on the hump.

Transmissions too. I had a 4 speed Esprit with full gauges, deluxe, and no console. As I recall it had A Saginaw 4 speed with Hurst shifter, think the lever was different than for Muncie.

There was no linkage between deluxe interior and console - they were independent options. (The car in the picture above is an example of one).
