Default KRE D-port 505 dyno

Darby (Grandville) sent me his heads to see if we can make some more steam with his combo. Everything stayed the same and only the heads were done. We did do some manifold mods last season but it didn't show any real gains. I tweaked the cross sections on the intake and exhaust, kept the 45 degree seats, and valve sizes went from 2.19/1.66 to 2.2/1.7. Head flow was very close. Best port was 345 cfm before. Best port 355 after. They are still a standard port running 5/16 pushrods, 1.65 rocker and pac springs with 605 open and hollow stem intake valves. Darby has some more tuning in the car to do. I think there is 5 or 6 more hp to be found. Look at the before and after sheets on 92 octane. He also tried some Q16, the last sheet.

Great job blaktopr! Gains like that don't come easy at that level. You have to work for every positive horsepower and it's easy to go backwards.

Thanks. We were under the target "peak hp" but the rpm range target was met and then some. Holds on well past peak. Darby is going to play with collectors and has a shear plate to try too at the track.

I see you switched to the SV1 carb for the last pull. Were the gains on that pull due to the carb or the Q16 fuel?

Scott I wanted to see what it would do, and he had the carb all set up for it.. It was a tad rich, probably would've been 790's

Because of the small-diameter 5/16" pushrods to help with flexing have you opted to use pieces with a thicker wall ? Example 0116" -0118" thick wall.

Steve this motor had 240 passes on it as of last fall, I've been using 5./16 thickwall ever since i started using roller cams in the grandville!

OK.

Darby, I'm not suggesting there is anything wrong, only that a thicker wall section pushrod will help with deflection.

Flex in the valvetrain means less valve lift and less airflow into the cylinder.

"With a stiffer pushrod column, increased valvelift should be able to be measured statically in applications using a lot of spring pressure. The higher the engine speed the greater the increase will be at running speed. Keep in mind that by increasing wall thickness to a pushrod column does add strength, the percentage of increase is very small. The large gain in column strength comes from increasing the pushrod diameter."

"Do not be overly concerned about pushrod weight. The pushrod is on the slow moving side of the valve train. The additional weight of a heavy wall pushrod usually provides a much needed increase in valve train stability."

And great numbers, congratulations.

Got it, good deal.

That was what I was asking about, using a thicker wall 5/16" pushrod.

I thought about trying a SV1 carb, but without knowing anyone who has done it I didnt want to take the chance, . I bought a ProSystens 1250 instead.

Darby,
How wide is your port at the push rod punch?
