Clear Coat peeling on the `99 Trans Am
I have been debating on getting the TA wrapped but obviously have to deal with the clear issues beforehand on the front and rear bumpers.
It appeared that the base coat was ok when I started and I was careful not to hit it when sanding. You can't catch a nail on the clear so I think I'm good; it's ready to be wrapped. But ... I'm curious, what would the next step be if I want to restore the bumper? Polish the dull base coat and wet sand the good clear before spraying new clear?

Not sure what that is a picture of, maybe around a headlight? I know nothing about paint but it looks like you have a lot more going on than clear coat peeling.

That clear has to be stripped or your wrap will lose adhesion too.

I know nothing about paint either, but when I applied some wax to the base coat, it does come back. It's going to have to be cleared since it's been sanded off.

Here's a shot after a quick compound buff.

Its called "delam" or delamination. GM was plagued with it in the 90's. There is basically no stopping it without stripping.
As mentioned, if you put wrap on it, it will still continue to delam, only now it won't be just clearcoat coming off. |

I'm going to go ahead and polish it for now, knowing that in the future It'll be a strip and paint job. The rest of my paint is in great condition. Not bad for a car with 372,000 miles on it.

Water base paint tech from the early 80's that was never improved upon until around 2003 ish.
The fix is to remove bumper, strip by sanding, repaint sealer, base and use a solvent clear coat |
