Default Bought myself a birthday present

I bought a 69 WT 400 engine with 48's.... Engine date is I 27 8
#48 heads...Dates are A 14 9...A 27 9. I'm thinking that the dates are too far apart to be "born" together. Also a curious anomaly... One head has a very clearly cast 48...the other head has a very clearly cast 4 and a somewhat lighter STAMPED 8. Do you think the 8 fell out of the casting and somewhere down the line this was realized and they went back and stamped all the heads missing the cast 8? ......What do you think?

Overwhelmingly Pontiac heads ID numbers are cast and raised off of the basic casting , not stamped as you say.
If there’s a flat ground pad that has the 8 stamped in to complete that 48 casting number then that would raise a red flag for me!

Pull it apart and look at it. You should be able to compare heads to see if they are the same. I have seen the factory stamp in casting #,s on heads before. The dates are not too far apart either.

I do not have all the answers but you never know. My 74 SD I ordered waited 5 mos. I was at first POCI in WV. A guy came up to me and said your car was wrecked because the fenders nos. arent close. No I said never all original. Then he said it was wrecked at the factory! I can't attest to that however paint looks the same no overspray etc. So your heads could be ok. You never know why things are but they could be ok.

I haven't disassembled it yet, may not get to it for some time. I just thought it was a curious anomaly. Externally the heads look the same. I haven't even taken the (painted) valve covers off yet. Steve25...Are you saying you think someone ground off a 7 or 6 and stamped the 8?...not likely.... 47s are 1969 heads so can't have an A 14 8 date code and 46s are 1973/74 heads, again not gonna have an A 14 8 date code. I'll pull the valve cover off to check for screw in studs, pretty sure the 47s don't have them.(also have a set of 47s)

Ive seen a number of heads here that have stamped #'s on the heads. My # matching 455 70 gto has a head with a stamped # with build dates only a week apart . Not uncommon.

Dragncar...That's a firm NO !
scott70...I figured it was common, just thought I'd throw it out there to see what others thought. Just one of many anomalies in the mass production of our fine Pontiac power plants.

///\\\ this

We've had '62', '48', '12', '722' and '614' heads that had either one, both or all digits stamped. All of them were in the correct date range and within a couple weeks of the cast number on the opposite side.

I've seen pics of multiple SR '722' heads with 1970 casting dates and stamped codes.
