How many miles are on it and what cylinder is it out of?

That looks on the rich side to me, and possibly retarded timing too.

That's a strange looking plug as it looks wet and yet too hot of a heat range at the same time.
Then again if the motor has not had 4 to 5 full throttle hard runs on the ground strap which tells you if the heat range is good will not pick up any color to judge such by.

When you pull them out of the motor do they smell wet from gas that's making them black, because it does not look crusty like from oil?

Best to install a new set, go for a full throttle run and shut it off. That's the best way to check the ground strap for timing. Color is hit and miss with unleaded fuels but just glancing at that plug it might be a bit on the rich side, or it just had a lot of idle time on it.

Autolites are good plugs and I have never had any issues with them.

For your motor in one of there Copper type plugs I would run a 85, if you want to spend bigger bucks then go for a AP85.

It is difficult if not near impossible to "read" plugs on this new fuel. Best to tune for best performance in all areas and not worry about spark plug colors. Even out of engines running pretty "fat" I don't see a lot of carbon build up on them these days, and I tune these engines for a living.

Matter of fact when we get one dialed in correctly the plugs are typically light tan to almost white. Not uncommon for customers to call many months if not years after we tune their engines saying that their next door neighbor was over drinking beers when he pulled the plugs and he said they were WAY too lean and going to damage the engine.

I ask my customer if the engine was down on power, surging, pinging, or not running well, and they say it runs fine..........so LEAVE IT ALONE!..........FWIW......Cliff

I agree Cliff, but the plug should still be of the needed heat range that will not have the ground strap glowing red hot at full throttle and and max rpm.

I use and recommend NGK's and have had very good success with them.

However in the last two years I've had them fail in small power equipment. Just last Sunday the NGK spark plug in my Echo CS-600P chainsaw took a chit on me. I knew it was ignition related, but glad it was the plug for $3 and not the coil for $125!......

Heheh! Funny!

Yeah I was using NGKs for a while, same thing, was difficult to tell when they were bad or going bad, and went back to Autolites. After changing a few whole sets, determined that it was in fact one of the set (of NGKs) that were not firing right, or at all.

Here is how I read plugs...general driving around..you want to see a clean plug..no build up of carbon.
Reading plug for full throttle ., make sure engine is warm..do a good full throttle blast for a quarter mile or so. Shut the engine off..pull the plug...look full a 3/4 to a full turn of light soot on the base of the plug..and look for the color change half way up the ground strap.
