I am ready to change the oil in my '65 Gto Tribute, but realized I used my last oil filter on the last change. I prefer the Purolator (white) #L30005, it is an oversized alternative to the standard filter. Unfortunately none of the local parts stores carry it anymore. Does anybody have this filter that would sell a couple, or know of a possible source? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Purolator was recently purchased by Mann filters, I suspect the ownership change may have preceded the color change to red.

Maybe there is an old-time parts store in someone's town that might still have some of the older L30005 filters. Any suggestions regarding such a place ?

Nothing a $3 can of white spray paint couldn't fix.

WIX filters are white and are one of the best filters out there. With 4 cars I order them by the case.

According to the filter specs, the red L30005 will NOT fit my 400ci engine out of a '70 grand prix. I do know that the old white L30005 WILL fit. Maybe I am being overly cautious !

Yes, you are being overly cautious. The only difference in the filters is that GM went to the shorter filter in the mid 60s. They are completely interchangeable. Back in the day I drove a 67 326 HO Firebird and I used to buy the older long filter on the assumption that there was more filter media to filter the oil. There may be less pleats in the longer filter making both filters have the same area, I really don't know for a fact. At the time "bigger was better"............ As long as you have the physical room, you can use the older long canister filter.

When I was on COOP working at the local Pontiac dealer, while in vocational tech school (1970), the parts department would occasionally run out of one, or the other filter, as long as the canister would fit the car, we used the long filters until the parts department got some short ones.

The long filters were stocked less and less in parts store as the years went on, and most just stocked the short filter because it fit either application. The long filter is kind of a throwback, and usually has to be ordered.

Adding to Brad's comments, which I totally ditto.

According to Purolator website, the Tech line is aimed at the Professional trade.

From the specs, the Tech filter is same as the Red which is aimed at the D-I-Yer.

Purolator actually offers a couple other oil filter models with better media, the PurolatorOne and the PurolatorBoss.

Doesn't look like they offer either in the 30005 size you want though. I started a recent thread about the use of a Fram Ultra for my '64 GTO.

I found one that fits, the Fram Ultra XG-9837, a synthetic media filter. Purolator only crosses it to their low line Red filter. But the Ultra crosses to the Wix 51522XP, which is the Wix premium line, also has synthetic media. Purolator does cross that one to their premium PurolatorBoss line as PBL25288.

These are all small can filters so if you prefer the look of the larger can, no harm in sticking with the Purolator 30005 size in the Red or the white Tech paint job. Although the Amazon prices seem pretty high for an economy filter. You might search around for better pricing, I found one source listing the TL30005 for $4.99 plus shipping. A local oil change shop that uses Purolator filters might possibly hook you up for a good price, could be worth asking around.

Got 12 old style white ones left, thinner takes the red/blue ink off. and on goes the decal. Or paint them engine blue like the factory did.

I will add to the discussion here, that if you want your oil filtered to a very high standard, (roughly 8 times finer particulate removal than a standard full flow oil filter), I would recommend reading this thread that was recently posted about by pass oil filters:

With a by pass oil filter your oil will stay as clean as the day you poured it into the engine. Wear on the internally oiled parts decreases dramatically, and engine life as well as oil life increases dramatically.

GM, and SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), have both done studies that irrefutably demonstrate that oil filtered to less than 5 micron standard is a very worth while investment.
