Best rev limiter
Looking for a good stand alone rev limiter. I have a mild 455 with Eagle 5140 forged rods, a TH400 set to shift at 5200, a Gear Vendors overdrive, and a Davis Unified Ignition (HEI). I shift it manually sometimes, and have floated the valves a couple of times, so I want a reliable rev limiter, that has a clean installation, works as it should, and does not cause damaging backfires. Looking at the Petronix unit and the one from DUI. There are not many online reviews on either one.Any experience and input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

All my rev-limiters have been part of an MSD spark-box. Can't help you with "stand-alone" rev limiters. |

I use an msd street fire box with rev limiter connected to hei. The box is fairly small and I mounted it just behind the glove box.

I'm not sure how the DUI HEI is configured exactly but I use an MSD module with built in limiter in my HEI and it has worked perfectly for many years.
May be an option for you... |

"...stand alone rev limiter..."
That would be an MSD Soft Touch. Had one of these in my 455 Ventura bracket car. Don't know why so many think they MUST have an MSD box. Pontiac engines ran just fine with single points, street & strip, before the HEI came along. We have lots of drag strip wins to prove it. You can see my Soft Touch mounted on the pass side floor. |

I bought mine for $100 or so from Summitt or Jegs. I forget what brand, but it works great. I later replaced my unknown HEI with a DUI and have no complaints.
With the one I got, I can set the redline by turning a dial. Much nicer than many others I saw where chips need to be changed.

MSD soft touch HEI limiter. Easy to install and adjust. Been performing as advertised since installed 2017. https://www.holley.com/products/igni...s/parts/8727CT Last edited by Riku; 02-16-2020 at 05:11 AM. Reason: Adding link |

I have seen at least 3 of the Mallory units fry for no reason and one of them was on my car. All within a short time. I highly discourage their use. I think they are no longer made.
I am running a Pertronix unit and installed it in my glove box with double sided tape upside down on the top of the compartment so the heat sink faces down. It works and has been there for a couple of years now. I am not a fan of Pertronix as I had a problem with a set of Doug's headers after they took over the company, that said the limiter does the job. I think the MSD P/N is 8728. Can't speak on it but sure it works fine like most MSD stuff. |

Yeah, this is the Soft Touch I bought.
https://www.ebay.com/p/1317783761?ii...MaArCnEALw_wcB Used the common MSD plug-in modules. I never wanted to go past about 5500 rpm, especially with cast rods. So, I bought a set of pills from the 5000's rpm range. I think you can get 'em in either odd or even number sets. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-87451 https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-8745 |

I don't have any faith in MSD 6 boxes since 2 failed on me. One was 50 miles from home. I keep extra stock HEI ignition modules in my glove compartment.

"Pontiac engines ran just fine with single points, street & strip, before the HEI came along. We have lots of drag strip wins to prove it. "
I tend to agree, unless of course running a full out race engine. My understanding is that the aftermarket ignition systems are most beneficial for high rpm, which rules out most of our pontiacs. The only reason I installed the MSD streetfire was for the rev limiter. It works well, but can tell no difference when running the same engine on my factory HEI by itself. Lots of good suggestions here. I am leaning toward one of the soft touch ones.

They worked fine on my 409 Impala race car but the old dial Mallory rev limiter(the only one I found in the early 70s. Left a lot to be desired you had to rev the engine up and turn it until it cut out, then back up as the dial was not accurate on the rpm. One race it took us forever to figure out that was why we were losing power between shifts. Although it did save the motor one day on the street when the funky Offy sideways dual quad linkage stuck wide open and I had to push in the clutch until I could turn the key off!

MSD Digital 6 works great. This is my third MSD box and I had one issue with an old 6AL and MSD fixed it for nothing. I have also used a Pertronix 3 with the rev limiter and it worked.
