Do you have a shut off valve that you can reach to turn the nitrous off while you are seated in the car?

It’s good to have the valve and the suppression system.

![]() Yes, I have one in the back, near the batteries, with lines to the front. I've had it ten years at least and never re-filled it. It has kept its pressure over the years. It costs more to re-fill now than the whole system cost me back then. Fortunately, I've never had to use it. I carry a small hand extinguisher in the car, within reach, on the floor of the car near the front of the seat. Jim

I'm running a SafeCraft LT Fire System, 10 lb cylinder. 3 nozzles, 2 in the engine bay, one on the driver.

Little info on fire systems -- Halon is no longer legal -- FE36 is another choice and works well but if used in the interior it will corrode the hell out of aluminum and is hard on the lungs if you inhale the stuff -- just a word of advice

Halon use is perfectly legal. "Recycled" Halon 1211 can legally be bought and sold, but is expensive. Personally, it's worth the extra cost to have Halon in the garage, since it does no harm to any surface or electronics. I haven't decided whether I'll use Halon in the race car.

It is my understanding that NHRA made Halon illegal because it removes the oxygen to kill the fire -- but at the same time would cause a driver to pass out do to lack of breathable oxygen -- at least that's what I was told a while back. It may be ok in other uses just not in the car at a sanctioned track.

Those systems appear to be Halon 1211 . Not as good as the old halon 1301 which has been banned as its production created green-house gases.
They are great, as they don't damage the mechanicals or electronics. Really clean. It's what they use in semi-conductor fabrication plants. It is important to get away quickly so you don't inadvertently suffocate, as they work by displacing the 02.

My random thoughts:
Shutoff valve is a terrific idea. Practice using it in the garage with your eyes closed (as if the car is filled with smoke......because it will be). Practice it lots and it will be second nature in an emergency. We put fire sleeve on the hoses between the bottles and shutoff valves since they're still capable of flowing nitrous if a fire breeches them. Grocery Getter had 5 lb system and we never used it. Boss Bird has 20 lb system and it got used once. Its unrealistic to think of the fire system putting the fire out entirely. The more realistic thought is that it buys you time to get stopped and get out (speaking from personal experience). The rules require an SFI-15 suit but only SFI-5 gloves and shoes. That's a serious weak spot. If fire starts under the hood, it's going to get to your feet first. I used SFI-20 funny car boots and SFI-20 gloves in the Grocery Getter. The new generation Simpson gloves are flexible enough to work all the controls and switches...not like the old school oven mitts. Consider a head sock to cover up all the bare skin on your neck and chin. That's another weak point to address with a full protection plan. Make it a habit to leave all your equipment on until you get out of the car. Arnie's hands are mangled like they are because he was in the habit of taking his gloves off while still in the car. It was only after his gloves were off that the fire showed itself. Hope this helps.... Eric
