Another 455 cam suggestion
Hello all I would like some info on a cam that I have and if it would be good to run or change to a newer camshaft.
the cam is an Ultradyne 280/288 @110 I have a 455 with 96 heads running at zero deck hight. The heads have some bowl work done and are port matched to an Edelbrock manifold. I will be running HO manifolds with 2.5 " exhaust all this in a 67 gto with turbo 400 and 323 rear gear. Will the current cam be well suited to street duty or do I need something along the lines of a comp xe274 or 744 pontiac cam or go bigger such as an 041 pontiac cam. I would like good vacuum to run the accessories pb and ac. I would like it to run very well on the highway as well as an occasional visit to the strip. I know this is HFT cam and would like to stay with the same thing. I know there are some very knowledgeable people here so any suggestions will be appreciated Thank you |

Which Edelbrock intake?
Do you run a stock torque converter? A member Sprocket ran that UD cam. Quote:

I ran that cam on a 112 LSA in 455 w/ a ported 96 head, 9.6 compression in front of a Richmond 5 speed and 2.73 gears. engine loved it. Very easy driving on the street, 16" vacuum, plenty of power. 5200 seems about right.Ran 12.50's with RA manifolds, 12.20's w/ headers. 112 mph. Put down 350 at the tire w/ the headers so like 400 at the crank.

Yes, I ran that cam for many years with good success. My combo using that cam was '70 GP, 455 +0.030, stock bottom end, 4X 96cc heads (2.11/1.77 valves, competition valve job out of the H-O Racing book but no porting), 1.52 rockers, Edelbrock RPM intake, Holley 750cfm Street HP, GTO RA exhaust manifolds, 2.5" full mandrel bent exhaust with X-pipe, TH400, Continental 13" converter, 3.42 rear gear, 28" tires. I did not visit the track much, but in triple digit heat, I could get the car to run 13.0X over and over and over here in DFW.
What I liked about the cam is that it was easy starting, easy driving, zero issues with power accessories or a/c, and yet had a somewhat nasty sounding idle. I drove it all over the place like it was just "a car". What you need to know is that there is lots of torque everywhere all the time! What you also need to know is that the engine is done by 4800 rpm +/-, which is not a problem for the street. I would expect that your worked heads would add maybe a couple hundred rpm to the useable range. My opinion is that there is no "newer" HFT cam of similar size that is any better than the Ultradyne. I am an 041 in a 455 type guy, but for street work, the UD 280/288 kicks ass. Basically, I ran a stock 455 engine in a heavy car and ran 13.0 without really trying.

Hello Thanks for the input Will be running stock converter a Performer intake or stock intake that has been opened up a bit.
would this cam work with fuel injection such as the Fitech unit? |

The cam will be fine with stock converter, and a Performer or stock intake. I have no idea about fuel injection.

The fi tech should be fine. The cam is not that much over stock. But the engine and fi would prefer a wider lobe spread.

I didn’t mean to say 110 in general is to narrow. In this case to me it just makes a fairly small cam a little smaller in a big engine and idles slightly worse. Fi shouldn’t care though. It is a nice cam, if I had a ud/288 with 110 ls I would not change it... certainly not suggesting the voodoo 703 is not a great street cam.

Thank you for the responses. I have run this cam in a 389 tripower 65 with a 4 speed with a 390 gear and it was very impressive on the bottom end. I realize a 455 is a larger engine and an automatic with 323 gear is different altogether. but I did like the torque down low and I would like everything all in by 5000 to 5200 at the most. With that being said this will be street driven to as far as Austin and back so it will se highway miles. Any other suggestions such as should I run 1.65 roller rockers will be appreciated .

A friend has the same cam in a 72 HO Firebird ad works all the accessories fine. Mild but a little more performance than a factory style cam.
