Needle Clip
Is there any good reason to leave the clip on the needle after the float is adjusted? My new floats cause the clip to bind occasionally when the float drops.
I seem to recall that back in the sixties there were no clips on the needles. Thanks, Les |

Most Rochester 2-BBL carbs I have inspected, that were rebuilt correctly seemed to have the clip on the needle as factory.

The clips are often installed incorrectly and they bind, pop, or stick. They are installed correctly from the rear of the float with the open end of the wire clip facing the pontoon. They DO NOT poke up or through any holes in the float hinge area. That may help.

Since Tripowers are discussed here, no clip needed on end carb fuel inlet needles, center carb float has the clip located in proper hole on float arm.
Correct float drop setting eliminates binding. |

If you polish the float "Hump" that the needle's "head" slides across, very rarely do you have any "Sticking"/"hanging up" needles.
This mod works on Rochester carbs AND Holley carbs. Tom V.

I used the clips when I was still restoring, but they MUST be installed correctly (as above). If installed correctly, with the correct float drop, they will not bind. The clips prevent the neopreme tip of the plunger sticking in the seat. It rarely happens without the clips, but it does happen. Have posted before about NOT using the tiny hole in the float arm that appears to be where one would hang the clip; as this location WILL cause binding. Jon.

Jon, Rochester 2GC and 4GC has dedicated holes in the float arm for the clip.
These works as intended, IMHO. Some later 2GC´s has a different style float arm with no provision for a clip. When the Quadrajet appeared folks thought the holes in the float arm was the proper location for the clip, which we all know by now, is wrong. The proper way is to hang in the clip from behind, opening facing front of carb. Carter AFB/AVS clips, when used, on the other hand is hanged in from rear opening facing the float. FWIW |

Since the floats have no hole for the clip. There seems to be only one way to mount the clip. It can then rotate on the needle until in eventually binds on the side of float arm.

Kenth - I am aware of the holes in the 2G and 4G floats, and also aware that placing clips in the holes CAN cause binding. Have seen it more than once.
POSSIBLY, if everyone ALWAYS bought ONLY genuine GM parts, MAYBE placing the clips in the holes MIGHT work MOST of the time. But use the holes if you wish. And the more I look at the pictured floats, the more confused I get. Not sure how these would work with the older tripower carbs. Jon.

BTW, these floats were purchased from Mike Wasson @ Pontiac Tripower.

Originally used in most 1969-78 2GC´s. I would not use any clip on these floats. |

I sent Mike Wasson an email, asking about the clips. He said they should not be used with these floats, FWIW.
