Default 69-72 Tilt Column Rebuild

Hi guys,

I just purchased a 69-72 Tilt Column for my 70 LeMans. I want to go through it and make sure it’s right before switching it out (I think you just need to depress the spring clip through the slot if memory serves). It has a lock cylinder without the key so I know I will need to figure out how to remove it but I would also like to know if there is a good step by step anyone has for taking it apart because it will need to be repainted. I have the tools and have tightened quite a few loose tilts in my day but after that I haven’t taken one apart.

Also, what paint, lacquer, since enamel is so soft??

Thanks for any help you can provide

Thanks Mark, I saw the Buick write up and have a resto book. I was looking to go deeper with pulling the output shaft and all.

That’s the stuff, thanks LeoP. I had read that before somewhere.

As far as dissaseembly and reassembly. I just received mine and it was masking tape residue in the pictures so it does not need painted

I am working on mine as well. What paint should be on the column? Is it gloss or semi gloss?

What year is the tilt column? I put a tilt column from a ‘71 Cutlass into my ‘69 GTO and had issues with wiring the ignition switch. 1971-72 use a different switch than 1969-70. I don’t exactly remember what the remedy was but I got it to work. I believe I had to swap out the ‘71 tilt ignition switch with a ‘69 tilt switch to match my car’s wiring..
