This was the last straw with a 4 speed, I snapped the main shaft in my toploader.
My heavy A body and too much Pontiac power. Now it will be a trophy on the wall. Any of you guys save busted stuff?? I did buy a new main shaft and think I have the 4 speed assembly sold. I must say the ford toploader held up better than the T10 and the TKO 600.

I busted a Munci decades ago testing a new carb we built for a pretty "mild" 455. I pulled 2nd gear and hit it hard, went to "neutral" (snapped the main shaft). The only problem with what I did is that the customer was in the passengers seat at the time......OOOPS!

A few years later I was testing a pretty stout 455 in a later T/A and it had the Borg Warner Super T-10 (upgraded for big power). Same exact deal, did a full throttle start, tires spun a bit, grabbed second pretty hard...tires spun a bit then hooked hard.....and BOOM!

I have next to no luck at all with manual transmissions behind Pontiac engines and these days for sure I do NOT do any road testing with them after we have done carburetor or other work for the owners!.......Cliff

I'm keeping this cracked th 350..when I redo the shop bathroom I may use it as a urinal..just need to seal the crack up.

That was 3rd gear when it snapped! I also saved my old piston I broke the ring land off of also.

Broke a th400 bellhousing in the Olds. Didn't even know. Went to pull motor for the winter to do some upgrades. Good thing I didn't go one more round that season.
Broke the #4 main web on my 496 Olds. Should have went with my gut and bought a block girdle. Caught it before it became a total yard sale.
Pulled the ring gear bolts out of the ring gear on the Cutlass. Just came through the lights and let off and loud bang then the motor shut off. Figured it blew up and coasted off the track. Got out looked underneath and didn't see anything. Got back in and it started up oil pressure was fine no weird noise. Then the car started to roll a little but was in park. Shut the engine off the car rolled but the driveshaft didn't. Got real lucky with that one. If the rear had locked up at 120 mph I might not be here today.

Oh yeah, I save almost everything. One of these days I'll collect it all and put it in one place. I got one same way Cliff described. Carb upgrade over winter, first time out in spring and grabbed second. Made it back home cause it was a couple of blocks away. M20, first and second gear trashed. Input shaft trashed. That carb upgrade cost me a lot of dough. Got broke Pistons, snapped rods. Probably a bunch of other stuff too all sittin on shelves around in the garage.

Whats the expectance of a M22 assembled with a SuperCase & steel mid plate living for a good while at the track on new G70-14's, (mid 1.90 60ft's) behind 518 hp/547lbs of torque ???

I'd say not too much to worry about Pinion Head. There is very little parts breakage at the PS drags. Running on stock tires, you can still nab decent 60 foot times, but they aren't dumping the clutch at 5,000 rpm on sticky tires either, so transmission or driveshaft issues aren't as big of a concern. The tires become a nice cushion. There are tons of PS 4-speed cars of all makes having fun in that class. Lots of them making decent power and running well into the 12 and even 11 second zone.

Here's Donny's little L79 with a stock M21. He's been pounding on the same transmission for at least 8 years, he's in the 12's cutting 1.7 60 foot times. He doesn't baby it either. Maybe you guys will enjoy this, he was paired up with a 67 RA bird for a best 2 out of 3 shootout. Or maybe not, it didn't fair too well for the bird, lol.

LOL, I went with billet yolk, and 1350 joints for that reason!!

Everyone thinks I’m crazy but everything I am doing to my car I am doing way overkill for my intentions just for the fact that I have learned the hard way that if the wrong thing let’s go at the wrong time it can take so much more with it. My 467 has all forged internals my 9 inch has 31 spline axles and will have a hellical locker. Beefed up pumpkin from strange or moser. 1350 u joints and billet yokes. T56 magnum says it has a 700 ft lb rating. We will see. I had a 64 gto with a stock 66 YS 389 and M20. Caught second one good time and snapped the points where the rear crossmember attach. Rearend pitched forward and broke the snout off the m20. Thousands of dollars later I realized pay now or later if you’re gonna “get on it” LOL

I try and do the same depends on the bank book. My street car has 35 spline spool, motor has forged internals, I knew the tranny was the weak link, but for my h.p. it is hard to get a stick to hold up without spending 10g's. Going th 400 with some billet internals.

I thought this was funny. Last year at a match race we running the nitro funny car of Bazz Young, a 69 Camaro with a Brad Anderson Hemi. He has a large table and a couple milk crates full of all kinds of mutilated hemi parts. Pistons, rods, valvetrain, typical nitro carnage. A 12-14 year old kid walks up and is looking over all the blown-up parts. He asks Bazz, "where did you get all these blown-up parts?". Bazz, with his Australian accent doesn't miss a beat. He points to the funny car and tells the kid, "I have a machine over there that makes them!". The nitro cars seem to make routine sacrifices to the aluminum gods.
