Default Headed to NM to Pick Up This '69 Grand Prix Model J Next Week.

Good running '69 Grand Prix Model J, $5900 with a built 455 installed plus the original 400/400 pulled due to cracked exhaust manifolds. 87,000 original miles. Repainted. Needs a new vinyl top, front bucket upholstery, windshield and a ton of little things fixed. Looking forward to driving it.

Looks like a good deal. The '69-'72 Grand Prix's are under rated and under appreciated cars, IMHO.
I'll be putting my triple white '72 up for sale locally very soon. I hate the prospect.

My 69 GTO came from New Mexico (Arlington build, sold originally in Waco TX) was absolutely rust free. Worth the trip to get it up to Michigan 20 years ago. Only downside was the interior was toast......all sun dried, including dash. At least for me a complete interior redo was way easier than rust issues. Good luck with it; if it lived in NM for most of its life I am sure you'll be pleased

First thing I want to thank everyone for the positive replies. Most forums have a "Like" or "Thumbs up" button for posts. Wish we had one here.

I live in Northern Arizona and you are absolutely right: Out here in the Southwest, the sun cooks the bejeezus out of everything about cars here except the metal - if its covered well with paint. I've got a friend with a '62 LeSabre sitting in a field and the sun has burned off the paint and has begun to burn the hell out of the metal! Not kidding.

I'm in a quandary (everyone should be so lucky) about this GP. I REALLY like my '67 GP (Arlington-built, bought in Ft Worth) as its unusual and fairly scarce. You don't see them. They made ~29,000 of the '67 vs. ~125,000 of the '69. Add the 70, 71, 72 models and there are a lot of them out there. Good news bad news. Parts and accessories for the '67 are few and far between but for the 69-72, you can get everything.
I'm going to drive them both for awhile and probably won't keep both of them. This was too good of a deal to pass up, and, depending on the condition of the 455 in the '69, I may put that in my '67, re-install the original 400 in the '69 and turn it. That said, we had a '70 Monte Carlo many years back, GREAT car, but one morning I hit the neighbor's pickup with it due to a frosty windshield and the sun in my eyes. Yes. Stupid. My wife loved that car and has always wanted another. This '69 looks a LOT like that Monte and she's already taken a shine to it. Maybe I will keep both of them...
Worse things could happen. Whatever happens, I sure like that big boat ride.

Your 67 is stunning. For me it wouldn't be a hard decision on which one to keep. Hopefully you can keep both of them.

You’re very kind. This ‘67 is a 20-footer condition car but I agree that the shape GM made it in is stunning.
Thank you for the input. H

I am really starting to dig these Grand Prixs. Never really cared for them until the past year or so. I have no idea what took me so long. lol.

They grew on me as well. As a kid, my best pals dad worked at a Pontiac dealer and was driving a different early-70’s car all the time it seemed. I always admired those big 2 door boats (GP, Bonneville, Catalina, Grand Ville) and am very pleased to be driving one (or two) now.
For the weight, they still run well and a 58 year old guy doesn’t look too out of place in one....
Saw a nice triple black ‘68 GP for sale on CL recently at a very reasonable $8k.....

Funny how these cars hit people. I’ve always wanted a 69 SJ 428 HO 4spd. It’s on the list just as a 70 GT37 400 4 spd is...

Is the '69 effectively an A-body?

Pretty much is. the changes are a sightly longer frame but the rest are the same. Most everything interchanges but the sheet metal and the GP has one long nose which sets the engine way back compared to any other A body but the later made in 70 Chevy Monty Carlo

I lot to like about the styling of the '69 GP. Your side view pic really highlights the great lines. And aren't those door handles just the best!

Default Home Safe and Sound

Rented a uhaul transport trailer, actually very impressed by the E-Z loading and steadiness of the pull at 75+ mph. For $125 it was a bargain. Went almost 500 miles each way, the '69 GP-J is now in the garage, getting ready for some much-needed love and maintenance. I LOVE the door handles, inside and out. Shoulder belts are a plus. Man, that snout is long and I'll wager that my engine hoist isn't going to reach without an extension. The 455 in it stone launches this car, I think it's destined for my '67 and the mrs can drive the J with a stock rebuild of its original 400.....

BTW, the Dodge is the second of two 12-valve Cummins-powered pickups I've owned and the ONLY Chrysler products I've ever owned. Jus' sayin'.

Man that's a beauty! Congrats on the find, and enjoy that girl cruising the high country of AZ. I recommend a run down Hwy 191 from Alpine to Clifton/Morneci when you have her road ready again. Beautiful drive in a beautiful ride...

That GP is sweet, I always loved those door handles and the cockpit feel of the dash. Good Luck with your new ride.
