Racing with a T-top car
Looking for input.
Back In 80's knew a guy running a 2nd gen bird had issues running his t-top car. Mid twelves had him fighting with twist issues. I'm looking at 3rd gen Firebirds and they are flimsy even in hardtop form. My 90 hardtop has issues( aftermarket sunroof hack, and a damaged floor at subframe pinchweld) so it's best suited as a parts car. So... Shopping for better car preferably 91-92 as they look nicer. Finding nice hardtop version has become challenging. I've already passed over some very nice t-top cars at very reasonable prices. Although I'll probably build a 10.0 package I would like to build chassis to 8.50 cert. Certain I shouldn't have much twist issue but t-top is still a concern. Are t-tops treated like convertibles by NHRA? Anyone have some build tips to share?(doesn't have to be 3rd gen specific) Thanks. |

I would think if you're building to an 8.50 cert that convertible or T-top wouldn't even matter?

Don't know much about the drag racing issues, but 92 cars are supposed to be stiffer/stronger due to the factory starting to use adhesives along with welding.

My brothers 84 sucked to weld on because of the layered steel with adhesives.

My brothers back halved 2nd generation went mid 9's for years with no problems. I also built a 3rd generation stock suspension car {for sale] for a friend that has run 6.40 in the 1/8

I am running 10.00 with an 89 Bird and T-tops, big tire car on a European (FIA/DMSB) certified 8.5 chassis. 502 and TH400 with 4 link rear. If it is twisting I sure don't see/feel it. That rear hatch is heavy as hell though without struts on it. I use a piece of aluminum tube to hold it up when I need in there to fuel or service the batteries. Make sure you super dark tint the tops to cut down on glare and heat. If you want I can email some pix of how the car was built (in France) as I bought already done for the most part.

Ken something already done is worth investigating. Thanks PM me your number and I will give you a call.
Crustysarge... Pics would be great. Email bw68pfc@aol.com BTW I know about the hatch weight. Those struts are exciting to replace without an assistant. Neat car btw |
