Default Poll: 455, 440, Other

Ok, so my stock 455 ingested some paper that apparently was hiding inside and ended up damaging it due to oil starvation.

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=806506

This poll is to ask what I should build and the pros and cons associated with each: 440, 455, or Other

The car is a '70 LeMans with a TH400 and 3.08s. It is a street cruiser and will see highway time and no strip time. I just want a fun motor that has power but great manners because it will get its AC hooked up as well.

I have a 428 crank as well as the 455 so I was considering building the 440. Of course a 455 represents the "no replacement for displacement" category but I'd like some input.

For tall 3.08 gears and a "fun cruiser" you can't beat a 455.

The only reason to de-stroke and build a 440 is because, like me, you're weird and want to do something a little different and maybe try to turn some stupid high RPMs.

That doesn't seem to fit your goals, so stick with the 455. You need torque and there really is no replacement for displacement where that's concerned.

What Will said. 440 for a screamer with low gears, 455 for a cruiser with high gears.

It's real simple, if the car is over 3600 lbs with you in it go with the 455, it's power band with stock iron heads , a Cam of 225 duration @ .050" will be 2400 to 5000 rpm with 3.08 gears is great!

Go with the 455.. As long as you are grinding the crank anyway, have them do an offset grind to BBC journal size and pick up a little extra stroke. If this is just a cruiser, no need to stress the internals with a bunch of rpm. You will have plenty of power and the engine will live a long life.

I am a little weird as Will suggested and the car does have some 3:73s in it currently but was planning on a change to make it more highway friendly

With whatever you build for street only usage , even if it was just a 389 those 3.73s need to go anyway!

You already have the 455 so it makes the question easy for me, Build the 455

If you were starting from scratch and had nothing I might suggest something different.

If you don't boil the tires up now stop light to stop light the TQ of a stock 455 with 3.73 gears in the back then it needs to hone thru anyway!

455 if you don't want to change your gear ratio.

I was just reading an old H-O performance parts catalog where the section with the best all-around combination was written. I miss those guys and wished that I had purchased a few more items when I had the chance.

455........What heads are you running currently?
What the budget? Any room for port work & bump up the compression a little......might be the best bang for the buck!!
