Oil Pressure
I drove my 68 GTO today for the first time in about two months. It has always held a steady 60lbs of oil pressure at 60mph/3000 rpm at 180 degrees. It has add on Stewart/Warner manual gauge. Today it started out at 70lbs cold and soon dropped to the usual 60 lbs when it warmed up. After a few miles I noticed the pressure was at 50lbs and I about had a heart attack. Then it quickly went back to 60 and after a few miles back to 45/50. This continued for about 8 miles until I got home. The car has the original numbers matching 400 HO 360 HP engine w/4-speed. What could be happening? The engine never made any lifter noise or any unusal noise.

Sitting for several months? Unlikely anything just "broke" while sitting inside engine. What are some simple tests you can perform?

60 psi when hot is higher than a normal engine. 40-45 psi would be about
normal. Last edited by gtohurstjudge; 06-22-2017 at 12:55 PM. |

Discovered that the plastic oil line going from oil pressure adapter above filter to gauge was broken at the top where it comes out of adapter. Replaced with copper line and it is back to holding a steady 60lbs hot. I have owned car about 6 years and it has always held this amount of oil pressure.
