72 Lemans 455 HO help
Hey guys new to the site.... so hello!
I hope one of you guys can help me. I have a chance to buy a 1972 455 HO lemans convertible that has been rotisserie restored and is I believe the real deal. The engine is correct for the car but not matching, but he also has a complete S/R blocked engine that is also available. The car is an automatic (sigh) and not completely finished from what I can see probably 80-90% done. I think it's a money pit for him and becoming an irritant. My question is how much is this car worth? I cant seem to be able to find an evaluation, I believe it is a 1 of 33? car so it is rare, but whats it worth. Also he has PHS documentation, but that's just paper...is there any place on the car I can go to verify it is the real deal, I know vin tag and cowl tag are obvious but i would like maybe a place on the frame I could go to and see something stamped? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jack |

1 of 17 TH400's?
Does the VIN of the car have the 'X' in it?

Left rear frame rail by where the tailpipe hanger mounts will have a part number, a date code, & a two letter code. The 455 A-body convert frame has its own 2 letter code & own part number. Feel free and post the two letter code & as John mentioned ck the VIN, the fifth digit will be an X if the car is factory 455 HO car. If the 5th digit is a Y, the car is a 455 Dport car (unfortunately, no where near as desirable).

There are a couple of these owned by PY members. I own a rough unrestored 72 455HO 4-spd car, Lucy Blue with no a/c. The Boss owns a similar car, but his is a low mileage original with a/c. I believe there was a thread somewhere on this board where The Boss was considering running it through one of the big auctions.
I am only aware of a couple of these changing hands recently. I believe there was a very nice yellow automatic that was listed for $125K several years back, but I have no idea whatever happened to it. I talked with a guy a few years ago who wanted my 4-spd HO convertible, but we never came close on money. He claimed he had found another 455HO convertible automatic that was in better shape than mine. I asked to see pictures if he bought it, but I never heard from him again. I'm not sure if the car existed, or he settled for more common car. Someone started a registry of 1971 - 1972 non-GTO 455HO cars several years back. I think there were only around 100 A-bodies with 455HOs built in 1971 & 1972, and I'm not sure how many of those remain. Some of the guys on this board probably know this person. I think his name was Dan Jensen. Some years back, I believe one of the PY regulars found a 72 GT 455HO convertible with an automatic. I believe he lived in the GA or FL area, and the car was missing original motor. I think it might have been a white car, but others here may know who I'm talking about. So few exist, and even fewer have changed hands any time in the last few years, so it's hard to put a price on these cars. Mike Last edited by poncho-mike; 05-20-2017 at 11:34 PM. |

Here is the registry and this is several years old.
If there are others out there then let Dan know so he can add them.

I wish I could open them up big enough to read them. I opened them with paint and tried to enlarge it but it blurred it out to

Double click on the pages, and they get bigger. I can read them easily on my screen. (edit - I was wrong, those last two pages are pretty tiny.)

It's a good car, with nice options, just need to finish the restoration. Pretty good deal for what he's asking for it I would say especially if you are buying it in US dollars.
Killer color combo of Sundance, white, white!

I could send them to someone who could maybe resize.
It is the best I have. Or contact Dan Jensen about them.
