I have never seen a 3.7X gear set for a 8.2 Pontiac Rear Axle. Chebby probably has one in a 3.73 ratio.

Post up on the Chevelle Forum board and ask the guys there where they are buying quality rear gears.

New 8.2 choices are very limited.

I used a Yukon 3.36 set few years back. Set up professionally but were still a little noisy on decel.

I have heard mixed reviews with Yukon. That being said I don't use 8.2 gear sets any longer.

Motive is what i've been told to use. Made in Italy. I'll be buying a set this summer if i can't find used.

I like US Gear, but I've used Richmond and Motive as well with success and very quiet. I kind of shop between these 3 depending on the ratio I want for the particular rear I'm doing. Some of the "not as common" ratios aren't offered every place.

I avoid Yukon as far as gears go, but I did try one of their 12 bolt posi units a couple years ago. That unit is still doing fine.

Last one I used was a Richmond 3.55 set that was fine, not noisy, but that was 20 years ago now. Probably more choices now.

Thanks guy's, I was aware of Yukon and Motive just was not sure if there were other options. Car will not be raced or driven hard, just want the 3:73's to compliment the TKO-600 .064 overdrive 5th gear. The 3:73 should put me real close to 2,100 rpm at 70 mph. Thanks again for chiming in.

uh oh........

Not meaning to hi-jack, but when I asked this exact question some time ago, Yukon got good comments. When I was looking I never really saw any bad press about Yukons.

As a result, I went with a set of 3.23's and they are now in my 8.5" 10 bolt along with a new Eaton Posi - ultimately going back into my 78 Trans Am. I was happy with the overall look and fit up - they seem to be nice pieces, but I won't have any power to them for a long time to come.

so.... what's the issue with them?

I had Yukons in an 86 full size Bronco (5.0/AOD) 8.8" rear. One day I downshifted from 3rd to 2nd while braking on the highway to avoid a collision. After that a horrible noise immediately began from the rear. I pulled the cover and one of the teeth had sheared off the ring gear!

My local diff builder (sounds better than "rear-end guy") prefers to use Motive, but said US Gear and Richmond are good, too.

I ordered the Motive brand in 3:73, we'll see how they work out. Again, application is easy driving street use, no race or abusive driving. Going in original 8.2 w/ 4 pinion carrier w/ factory forged axel's. Tubes welded, ends cut and reinstalled straight, precision bar check for straightness during welding and cooling. Factory straightness check before revealed a .187 bow from end to end, arrow straight now. Should help with even tire wear in the future. Thanks to all for your thoughts, opinions and reccomendations.

Richmond 3.55 in an 8.2 with an Auburn posi for the past 16 years and about 25,000 miles and never had any problems or noise.
