Question What spacer between fan and pulley?

After looking at this thread : http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=802584

and then checking the fans on ebay : http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...an&_sacat=6000

My question is what spacer would you use between the fan and the pulley, how thick a spacer??

Car in question is a '68 GTO w/factory A/C and factory shroud. Currently has a flex fan with huge spacers by a previous owner. And has cooling issues. Thanks!!

you need a spacer that places the fan about half in and half out of the shroud

No spacer was used with a factory clutch fan.

The distance between the face of water pump pulley & the centerline of the fan was determined by the "height" of the fan clutch.

I'm having a major "senior moment"---I can't envision how that would all fit together. Are there any pics or diagrams showing how this goes together that can be posted? Appreciate it!

The steel fan bolts onto the fan clutch, then out of the back of the fan clutch is the shaft. the shaft extends backwards towards its mtg flange about an inch maybe inch and a half. The flange then attaches to to the water pump mounting flange. With factory AC, the water pump will have 4 small studs that come out of the flange, these will pass through the slots in the mtg flange of the fan clutch, with a 1/2" headed nut attaching in front in each of 4 positions.

Locked up fan clutches can be a knuckle buster when pulling original fans, about 20 years ago I picked up a long offset ratcheting wrench that is designed just for the job of getting to those 4 nuts. Out in old yards, pulling pulleys & water pump cores, every once in a while I'll also across a really cherry fan shroud, that im going to also pull, that's when the whole process slows down to a snails pace w/o the long fan clutch nut ratchet.

PinionHead, I appreciate this info, it clarifies things a whole lot. I wonder about checking with the Snap-on guy when he comes to the shop (where our late model cars are worked on) and see if he has the long fan clutch nut ratchet.
