Default Old timers needed.

Yesterday I found these main bearings, and just had to buy them. Never heard of Fobert bearings before. These are for a 287/316 Pontiac. They are standard. Anyone ever here of Fobert Bearing Co? I googled them, and found out that P.J. Fobert has a patent for a bearing babbiting machine from 1930, and a patent for a bearing cutting machine, that cuts bearings into halves, from a tube.

These look like they are from the 50's, or 60's.

Fobert Bearing Company , if I remember correctly, was located in Indiana or Illinois and may still be out there.
One of the circle track mechanics in our town in Missouri liked to use their stuff.

If they are still out there, Fobert bearings cannot be too bad for a stocker pontiac rebuild.

My understanding was they did not open for business until the early 60s but may be a different relative as the 2.5" bearings would be for earlier 1950s engines..

I rebuilt a 347 once and that's as far as I have ever gone back, and never heard of them.

Yes Tom, 2.5" mains. We were looking at the old box, thinking I never heard of them. Then we look at the bearings, and Jeff asks me, what do these fit? I look at them and say they look like Pontiac, only small. Then we looked at the end of the box, and in very faint letters, we could see, Pontiac main bearings on it. Through measuring of them, I discovered they are for a 2.5" main,a nd a housing bore of 2.688".

Fobert was one of only a couple of companies that made full-floating rod bearings for early OHV V8s (Cad, Olds, Stude/Packard) in the fifties. And of course they also offered them for pre-'49 flathead Ford V8s which originally used floating rod bearings. I recently read a Hot Rod Magazine article from the early fifties about the machining details to change Cad/Olds to floating bearings.
