Looking for advice. My intake and crossover are separated. Today I'm fixing a leak at the O-ring, so I removed just the crossover. I didn't realize there was an opening to the push rods when I cut the old gasket on the head. See pics.
Question: See pics. When installing just the crossover is it better to cut more off from old gasket as shown I drivers side or less like passenger side? This is where I am at right now: Driver side: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...304_123004.jpg Passenger side: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...304_123008.jpg

I'm assuming your water crossover butts up to the intake and covers the hole with the gasket....
Most intakes I've seen cut cover the hole u r talking about and the water crossover just does that the water port But if it's been like this I guess it works ... .I guess u r gonna have to get a set of intake gaskets or similar and cover the hole with your water crossover... Post a pic of the cross over if u can Here's a pic of my intake that I've cut and left most of the material at the frt to cover the hole....

Yes the intake and crossover meet.
So should I cut back the passenger-side to match the driver side or just put new gaskets to match what I did so far and put it back together? I assume there is no oil pressure on that oil opening so chances are it won't leak oil from there either way right? ?

I decided to just cut both sides back and put new gaskets where it is exposed currently. Seem like a safer move.

I would change the intake gaskets out but that's me....lol...
U might be ok to repair the one side that has the hole exposed but I'm not sure u would have leakage of sorts....it kinda looks like the Intake goes some what over the hole so u would probably have leakage....but can only guess.... Might be just worth it to do the gaskets...

I would replace both intake gaskets and start from scratch. The crossover gets cut, not the gasket. Your driver's side gasket will likely leak some oil, even if a light mist. You can try a bead of RTV on the seam on the driver's side and see if it weeps oil or not.
Personally, I would never reuse an intake gasket which is what you are doing on an intake swap with the crossover cut. I know all the racers do it, but they have different reasons (cam and intake swaps on the fly in the pits) |

Yes, I use Right Stuff.
I won't reuse a gasket either which is why I went ahead and cut the passenger side back as well. I can see how I may get weeping at that seem over the oil chamber. Very annoying, because that's the whole point about having a cut crossover. For now, I'm going to put a bead of Right Stuff around the entire gasket area and button the whole thing up. If it leaks, I'll fix it right in the warmer weather when I have time and space to do so. Sheesh, here I thought I could fix the o-ring easily without this whole can of worms! Thanks for the quick replies everyone. Always helpful.

I would do like u mentioned above and see what happens.....might be ok ....????
The only way to not have this issue again should it arise is to have an intake cut correctly unfortunately So that all u will be playing with is the water crossover..... Hey u didn't mention what intake ????? Curious Good luck AdamisAdam...nice machine u got there.....

Yes, It's Cliff's old Q4B heavily ported by SD. I assume one of them cut it.
Finished product: http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...304_162435.jpg http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/n...304_162458.jpg Let's hope it holds. ![]()

Thanks for the compliment on the car.
I used a razor blade on the car to cut gasket. Hopefully the gasket and Right Stuff keep the oil in place. BTW, I couldn't remember the preferred method of applying Right Stuff so I put it only" the head side and nothing on the intake side. I think that's preferred. I didn't use gasket cinch this time. I think that's more for the runners IIRC. anyway, new belts on, hoses, I'll wait for a warm do to try it out.

The tight fitment of your separated crossover looks good.
The next one i cut, the coolant crossover flange will have more of a tear drop shape so the void in the head will be completely covered. ![]() The IMG button to the right can be used to copy and post only the pic without the convoluted photobucket site.

You don't need to cut the gasket either. That opening has no oil pressure on it, but it will still leak oil. Need to seal it up good. You should use sealer on the manifold bolt too, because all but the front go into the lifter valley area, and slowly seep oil up through the bolt threads. I use Teflon thread sealing paste on them. That way you don't have small puddles of oil forming on the manifold, under the bolts in a few thousand miles.

Here's my water crossover and intake just so they are all together
![]() I was unaware of the oil that accumulates on the bolts before as well ...I was told by another Py member to use sealer on reinstall after I pulled the intake and saw lots of oil on the bolts ....quite surprising
