Default Crate Engine

Has anyone used Len Williams? His prices seem very reasonable, but I can't seem to find any reviews. Does anyone out there have any experience with him?

Looks like Hornby, ON is less than 500 miles from Spotts, Sandoval, DCI, KRE, Tin Indian, and less than 550 from Paul Knippen. They are all higher than Len Williams. But Sandoval shows a "Budget Series" 400 block stroker shortblock, for about $4k. That is a good foundation for some 6x-8 heads, to build a mild pump gas street engine.

If you have access to a good pickup, you could pick the engine up, instead of having it shipped. Might wanna check some of these guys out. They are all well known Pontiac engine builders.

I reckin if you ain't a terrorist, he might let you come across for a brief visit, especially if you buy something which will help USA workers & businesses.

I helped a guy a few years ago, he got his shortblock from Len. Search threads I've posted on, and you should find details.

In a nutshell:
- customer wanted a motor ASAP. I told him with my schedule at the time and normal machine shop delays, it would be about 4 months for me to get him a motor.
- To "save time" he ordered a Len Williams short block, ported heads from SD Performance, a custom cam from me, and I agreed to help him bolt it all together when the parts arrived.
- Customer was a bit picky about head casting numbers, so it took Dave @ SD Performance about 4 months to get the heads delivered.
- It took Len about 6 months to get a basic 400 short block delivered.
- Motor burned oil for first 1,000 or so miles, then the rings seated.
- Motor has been running well for several years now, owner is very content.

When did the shop run of excuses? After about a month, you've pretty much used every one in the book.

Just for kicks, I Googled it. As with cam picks, ring seat times vary WIDELY.

It ranged from almost immediately, on the dyno, to as much as 2000 miles.

Many said it depends on the ring type & gap, as well as cylinder hone.

Some said synthetic oil will make it take longer.

Some said long periods of constant low rpm will make it take longer.

One guy said that Plasma Moly rings, with a ruff hone will seat almost immediately, but that the old style Moly rings with a smoother hone will take a lot longer.

Take your pick. OR, decide for yourself.

Just out of curiosity, are there any of the big name Pontiac engine builders that can promise you an engine in a month or less ?

From what I've read on this and other forums, the answer to that qestion is a definite NO !

In fact I seem to remember several accounts of the big name guys being several months behind. They can sell you the parts immediately. But any machine and/or assembly work will just have to wait in line.

If some of you know of any of the big name guys who can give you instant machine and assembly work, by all means please post their names here on this thread. There are probably lots of guys here who would like a super quick turn around.

Also, does anybody know of a builder who keeps some good basic shortblocks in stock, ready to use in a build or to sell ? You know, something like a basic 400 block 4.25 forged crank stroker. One of these could be used for lots of different builds. All you'd have to do is add the cam & heads you want, and you'd be set. But, do any of the builders have something like this in stock ?

Paul Spotts site says he has a 505 shortblock "in stock".

http://www.spottsperformance.com/IA2%20engine%20block2

But that's been on the site for a long time. So, does he actually keep one of these built & ready to go ? Could be. But I doubt it, because some want a forged crank, or something else that his "in stock" shortblock may not have. And I'd assume that if a guy has plenty of time to build motors ahead, there is not much demand for his motors, so he probably would not take a chance on somebody wanting exactly what he had on hand. But hey, all this is mere speculation on my part. I could be wrong, as I have been MANY times.

There are some Pontiac crate engines advertised on Ebay. I checked out one of 'em. Although there was a pic of an engine. At the bottom of the description, it says allow up to 6 weeks for us to build this engine. And this is not a big name Pontiac builder, as far as I know. And, since most all builders require a large deposit, there is no guarantee that the motor will actually be finished by the promised date. My guess is that most builders promise a very optimistic finish date, so as not to miss the sale.

if you are looking for a place in Canada. Precision Engines in Vancouver BC.

I've liked them so much that i have them do all my machine work and i live in California, and also while i was living in Texas building an engine, i had stuff shipped from them. its worth the cost for me to ship stuff all the way to them, as it really is that good of a service. Worth checking out. I'll never use anyone else.

I don't know him personally, & have never done any business with him. All I know is what I've read. But he's had a LOT of bad reviews on most Pontiac forums. I suppose you could read some of the reviews and make up your own mind.
