Default Flex plat witness marks ??

Pulled motor for new oil pump & cam and spotted this on flex plate.
Flex plate flexing on hit? I leave on brake at 4.5K...
Fresh PTC converter on relatively new TCI plate.
No limit bars & front plate only.
Note: used .062 washers to set pump engagement.
How did it touch with that clearance ??!!

Whats your convertor pullout? Should be minimum of .125" and max of .1875"(1/8"-3/16"). If too tight you risk pump or flexplate or convertor or crankshaft thrust bearing damage. Possibly all 4.

I wiped a pump and crank thrust from too little pullout clearance in my learn the hard way days. I had thought it was supposed to be minimal pullout.

That's the reason for the .062 washers as it was a little wide. That means there was .062 clearance between flex plate and converter.......but they still made contact ???

I would almost like to say , no way. .060 from the bolt holes to where there is witness of contact is crazy close for a .06 gap. But I don't want to call ya a liar either. Lol
Crazy stuff going on there.

What is the situation with your transmission cooler lines? Can we see a picture of the front of the convertor?

That's why I have a digital caliper to keep track of 0's after the decimal 😉
Kind of blew my mind why I saw it. Beginning to think about some wierd harmonics going on ?? Going to give PTC a shout.

That was a couple of the washers that stuck to plate.

Is there any chance the cooler is restricted? High oil pressure in the convertor will push it forward. I would take the flex plate off, bolt it on to the convertor with your shims in place and judge if it is even possible for the flex plate to bend in such a way that it could leave those marks.

I'm reading this is as you only have .062 clearance. @ half the minimum!

So... I'll try to clarify...

With convertor bottomed in pump there should be .125" MINIMUM gap between convertor bolt lugs and flex plate..

Maximum clearance is .1875"

As mentioned a restricted cooler or excess pump pressure from too stiff regulator spring or stuck regulator can force convertor forward or swell it.

Lastly...lose the TCI and use something better. CSR, JW, or...anything but TCI

John. Only a AllPontiac front plate with stock mounts a rubber trans mount. Thought stock mounts might help stabilize lateral movement? Have to say you were right. I didn't lie but screwed up. After checking present converter, it wasn't the guilty one. The previous one was. Think I got CRS or drunk. Lol Had me going for a while
Thanks for replies
