Default My 72 GTO WiW

I looked & looked for the correct forum for this kind of post and ended up here, I hope I'm in the right place.

I might be looking to trade my #'s matching 72 GTO with incorrect color paintjob and incorrect rear spoiler.

I know what I paid for it, but not sure what it's worth in its current condition, you can see it here: http://imgur.com/a/NvOUg

I'm a Chevelle guy and have only had this GTO for about 1 year, and have not done a done a ton of research on value.

PHS docs are here: http://i.imgur.com/GwK9KL8.jpg

Nice - is that Sunset Orange Metallic?

Turn your air cleaner lid back over.

The original color is Quezal Gold. The previous owner who painted this car just wet sanded the original gold and tried his best to do a candy orange with tons of metal flake in it. The paint job is pretty poor, tiger stripes everywhere etc.

I bought the car because it was very solid, and only had 500 miles on an engine & trans rebuild. The paint is the worst part about the car, and I think is detrimental to the value.

And yeah, I did flip the air cleaner lid over since those pics.

So no one has an opinion on value? Looking at the Hagerty site they go from $7000 to $30,000 for this car. I don't think I'm at either of those prices, but somewhere in between of course, just not sure where.

My guess based on my own experience and all with a wild stab at 10-15k.

Need to find that buyer who wants auto/AC in a 72 GTO in a sold body and OEM white interior are in cars favor.

The unique paint with spoiler will limit the buyer pool even more.

Softy market doesn't help find those buyers...

a really clean red one was bought for 12k, the guy drove it for a year, fixed all the rigged up stuff on it and sold it for 15k a year later...it was a very nice car..red, black guts auto with a/c, console with 68 dual gate, tach and gauges and an am/fm..nice paint etc..ralley IIs....i saw the car in person, and thought he did really well when he bought it, and was really envious he bought it..he was not a Pontiac guy and just stumbled on the car.... and he had a hard time selling it..a real hard time...his story...not mine..

i had no clue he was selling it, or i would have owned it..found out he sold it after it was gone..

but thats what i know...a similar car brought $15k..really good colors, optioned nice..

maybe not...its all relative..your car is a resto-mod and thats how you need to market it..the numbers really dont matter in a resto mod, and todays labor cost would be too much to return it to stock..

slap some repop big honey combs on it..and push it as pro touring..its a good looking car...you just need to find your market, and for a car like that this isnt really the place, many more purists here...i like it..id torture it for awhile for sure...

do you know what color it is? paint code etc...i really like it..

I have no idea what the current color is.

It's a cool car, super solid, so I will enjoy it for now. If I ever wanted to return it to its original color, I'd do all the work myself, as yes, it would not make sense to have a shop do it.

I'm a Chevelle guy, and am quite surprised at the low market value this car has. If it was a 72 Chevelle original big block car in this shape, it'd be worth way more.

I paid $16.5k last July for it, sounds like I paid about $2000 too much. It's nice however that it only has about 1000 miles on it since a rebuilt engine, trans and rear end.

Just a short note & this is not to knock the car in any way as it is a very nice car. You can't see the tiger stripes in the pics so I really wouldn't worry about it as a do it yourself paint job it looks good. Now the reason I write this. I don't know if you are aware that the dash in the car is also the wrong dash for the car. All 72's have an inset emblem that says Pontiac just above the glove box lock . It's inset in the dash & is about 1 inch long & about a 1/4 inch tall. All the 72 dash's have them. But I'm sure what has happened is the original dash was cracked as most of them do over time. Myself I like the 72's better then the 71 because of the inset grilles, it makes the 72 front look stronger.

The car was in Kansas most of its life, I dunno if the sun kills dashes down there. But it has been pointed out to me before it is not the original dash, or it has been recovered. I was also told the console should be covered with white vinyl, but it has been stripped off, and it is just the underlying black plastic that is there now. If you look at the pictures of the console, someone along the way very handily crafted a wooden console door lid lol. I have since bought a new black console door, and a plastic liner/bucket.

I bought this car last summer after looking at about 2 dozen cars that were very disappointing. This ended up being about the cheapest car I looked at, and it was in the best shape! I live in Western New York, and muscle car prices up here are on ave about $2000-$3000 higher than say the mid-west. It's the price you pay for living in the rust belt...

I didn't get to see all your photos until I downloaded the app. Car is very clean and dry.

Based on that I would think it in the upper end of 15-18k as is. Still think finding the right buyer will help get best price.

I'd keep it like it is and enjoy...

Restoring the air conditioning would add more value to the car than it would cost. There is a missing plastic insert that goes around the shift lever. I think the paint looks beautiful in the pictures. Did you get the PHS to make sure it was a GTO from new?

Yes, PHS docs are here: http://i.imgur.com/GwK9KL8.jpg

As far as the AC, I was given the original compressor pump etc, it just needs new hoses.

With the dreamers I see locally on CL out here, your car sounds like the deal of the century. Example:

http://tucson.craigslist.org/cto/5655813077.html

OK, regarding your car - I haven't seen that much gold flake since Discovery Channel put on a "Gold Rush" marathon. But it is a nice looking car, and I like the white interior with black carpet and dash.

Best bet is to check CL to do comps. Of course, asking price is NOT a selling price. I bet the listing above sits for a long time.

Here is another listing for comparison, and I think they are a little out of touch as well:
http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/cto/5657147255.html

This one shows that your car was about in the ballpark. Not a fan of the stripes, but the car looks nice for the limited amount of pics. This one is a vert, so there is a little bit of premium there, but not a real GTO.

I thought I "stole" my GTO at the $16.5k price tag (I thought it was a $25k car), but the more I look into to, not so much.

As I said before, I had Chevelle on the brain when I bought it, and GTO's just aren't Chevelle's when it comes to value I guess.

Live and learn...

I'll have fun with the car and just see where it takes me.

This car is up for sale about 2 hours away from me: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pontiac-GTO-...m=262501163442

Is that realistic price, or are they dreaming?

It's high in my opinion. I see many things there that may not be correct, and done a little cheesy for my taste; The '70 experts will chime in. Photos always look better than reality too. I learned that when buying our '71 Lemans, which I bought from photos, and I probably could have negotiated down at least another $1K or so, if I knew then what I learned after the purchase - but it's hard to negotiate a lower price when you can't see details or test things yourself. Luckily, if you can fix things yourself it helps soften the blow to some degree. Just part of the hobby.
