Default crank to oil pump drive clearance

just installed my Butler oil pump and All Pontiac oil pump drive shaft, the engine has a Scat 4.00" crank in it the rear counter weight is very close to the oil pump drive shaft, it only has .035 clearance, anyone know if this is safe?

If any part of your crank is moving even more than .020" you likely already have a new port hole in the block or the oil pan, so yes it's all good!!!!

How far does the drive shaft rattle around, is that .035" the average, or the minimum ?

If you feel you must tgen grind the offending area of the Crank .015", and yes that small amount of metal removal will NOT change the balance to any level of concern!

Thanks steve25, .035 is the minimum taking into account crank end play and all pump drive shaft play

I would keep a close eye on it. I didn't measure mine and didn't even notice that it was real close originally. First weekend I bent the oil pan up on a wheelstand and had to take the pan back off and noticed the crank was hitting the shaft. I ground quite a bit off of the oil pump shaft to get what I thought was plenty of clearance. I had to pull it again a couple weeks later and it was still rubbing. Ground some more off figureing I had enough and eventually late in the season it cracked up the middle because it was still rubbing it. Threw another one in I ground down even more to get me through the bracket finals and it cracked again after about another 80 passes. I ended up clocking the oil pump to move it further away and am using a Nightmare Performance shaft with a collar on it. I just measured it and I have about .120 clearance now and it's no longer rubbing. I don't know what the minumum is but when you pull it apart you can definately see if it is hitting. It will have wear marks on it 90 degrees apart.

I would want a minimum of 0.050'-0.060" clearance if it was mine, the oil pump drive shaft has the potential to oscillate a bit.
