Default Harmonic Balancer Removal

Posted this in street too..

How do those of you that have an automatic in the car with a solid flywheel remove the harmonic balancer bolt and re-torque it when you put it back together without have any holes to use on the flywheel. Will grade 8 bolts be strong enough on the front to hold it?

Install a Pry bar between the heads of 2 flex plate bolts and rotate the balancer CCW until the pry bar handle or shaft is locked in position... Pry bar parallel to the flex plate.

The motor is in the car with trans hooked up so you can't get to the flex plate bolts.

"Indian rope trick"
Back off the rocker arm nuts on one cylinder and feed 2-3' of rope through the spark plug hole. I've done it that way for over 20 years and just did it yesterday using some thick speaker cable.

Wonder how other brands do this? flex ring Starter teeth?

We use a 3/8" thick steel ring bolted to the balancer ( pulley bolts ) with a handle welded to it long enough to reach the frame rail. With four grade 8 bolts, you can torque the balancer to spec's or undo it without getting into the bell housing. It take a lot of force to sheer 4 5/16" grade 8 bolts.

I made a tool to do that very thing on the 4 bolt Pontiac balancers, like Joe mentions.

The tool looks something like the pictures below (based on a similar tool shown for tightening the Pinion nut on a rear axle).

You bolt the tool on to the harmonic balancer hub, rest the handle on the frame or on the ground so that the hub does not move, and torque the balancer bolt to 160 ft lbs.

Same deal with removing the bolt. In some cases you need a puller to get the balancer hub off the crank as it is a slight press fit.

I find the tool works a lot better vs the rope in the hole deal, but either will work.

Attach two vice gripes side by side on the flywheel or flexplate. When you rotate the engine enough that they touch the bell housing they will keep the engine from rotating.

Have resorted to the old starter and breaker bar method too. Place socket on breaker bar and place on crank bolt and rotate around to just below frame rail and secure with rope or tie straps.... Hit starter and breaks bolt loose.
But air impact is safer.

Can you make & sell a bunch? I'll take a square-tubed handle.
