Personally I didn't think they went bad. The letters are faded a tiny bit on my 80, but I am sure I could have them made up in vinyl if I ever wanted them perfect. Were the housings know to fail?

While the cost of $589 may seem unbelievable, it is actually much lower than the actual cost to manufacture the component. The material is ASA Black (temp and UV safe), the lenses are the same, ASA translucent orange. The cost of the display, three lenses, shipping and tax is well above $600, not to mention three years of donations by companies to support the digital redesign process.
Today's manufacturing processes are quite different as compared to injection molded 000components from the 1980's. The cost to manufacture by injection molded is crazy, the mold investment is like $20,000. By using a modern process like FDM, that's really the only way to manufacture plastic components other than injection molded. |

The hood bezels were not prone to failure. The plastic injection molded "turbo boost display" are all manufactured the same - translucent orange spray painted black. The material responds poorly to engine heat and UV, they crack, split when the hood is slammed and become impossible to glue or repair.

The people that make them try to get their money Mack too soon, like the goofy rear consoles, no one wanted them when you could get them at the dealer, those are like $550 or something stupid too. Ya, I want people bringing drinks in my car.

Note negative comments EVERYTIME a new reproduction part is brought to market...usual "too expensive" "who's going to pay that?" comments...
I've no dog in this hunt. Find it ironic that often same "expert" keyboard commanders think nothing of spending 1,000s of hours on InterWebz, Trolling Swap meets, and spending big $$$ hoarding parts...and THEN call out those who spend time, make the effort, and actually produce a finished licensed high quality product. Over time prices usually drop...as volume of sales increases... IMO - If you don't like it don't look or buy it...Freedom of choice. Someone paid over $100k for one of these @ BJ, buyer remorse or not. The price for these niche parts is peanuts in comparison. I've no Turbo's or need for the product offered...so I'll leave it at that. |

I think it's GREAT...that somebody invested the time....and $$$... to bring this part to market.....almost ANY 80/81 Turbo project car will need one....and the cars ARE on the appreciating curve...JMO
I had an 80 Turbo TA new...and mile'd it out @ 100k in four years.... Currently have TWO 81 "survivor turbo's....a Y84....and a Y85...

Another overpriced repop. That's all I'm saying. I don't feed the repop people. I hunt down nOS. one day you will see one at a swap and say, damn, why did I spend all that money on a PC of crap.

Looks nice to me. My 81s are cracked but it will get a Shaker anyway for the 400 or 455 in it.
NOS -might be OK might not-I have some NOS T top seals in GM boxes from a dealer that are harder than originals out in sun for 20 years and thicker also and would not fit if they were soft.

I can remember a time when these cars were new and hearing the complaints about some of the crappy factory parts, poor fit and finish etc. NOS doesn't always equal high quality or greatness.
I too am happy to see someone invest the time & money to reproduce these and hopefully will follow with other obsolete/hard to find parts. We have an 80 TTA (family heirloom) with 50k miles setting in one of the garages which may or may not end up needing one of these. It's refreshing to see unique 80-81 TTA stuff reproduced.

It is easy to claim cheap repop, not necessary repop or simply poor quality repop. Whatever your opinion, I reproduced this component since it appeared to be a need for Turbo cars. The era of manufacturing injection molded plastic is gone forever. An FDM process can serve as a replacement. I was lucky to earn the interest of so many companies who invested their time and dollars to support the redesign process.
I am not shy about the cost, $589 is well below the cost to manufacture, decals, shipping and tax to our New York office. The design investment is more of a write off for the companies. Anyone can say "that's too much" however, after three years of redesign, I am glad it turned out the way it did! At the same time, a member at the 301 garage have previously asked for the FDM electronic files used to produce this product. Nice try Joe. |

80-81 Turbo cars are not quite "ripe" yet...but but I feel that the values are on the upswing for stock ones.... original and restored...
